Local High School and Junior High Sports Report for Sept. 20, 2018

Volleyball

An 8 day layoff didn’t seem to bother the Monmouth-Roseville Titan varsity volleyball team as they defeated the Galva Wildcats in straight sets 25-9, 25-20 in a non-conference match at Monmouth-Roseville High School. Carly Gillen led the Titans at the net with ten kills and two blocks. Mackenzie Connell handed out nine assists and also totaled two blocks. Delaney Woodard chipped in with seven assists.

It was a full night of volleyball in the Lincoln Trail Conference. The United Red Storm remained unbeaten in conference play at (3-0) after beating Ridgwood in three sets on the road in Cambridge. Carly Thompson was over the floor for United. She had 14 kills and 18 digs. Riley Tyrrell and Jenna Bentz both handed out 18 assists and Josie Bentz tied Thompson for the team lead in kills with 14. Alli Lambin led Ridgewood in nearly every stat category, getting five kills, 13 assists, 11 points and eight digs. Jenna Stromquist led the Spartans in points with 13.

West Central is also (3-0) in the Lincoln Trail after a 25-17, 25-23 win over Mercer County at home in Biggsville. Corinne Booton had 12 kills and 12 digs. Jessica Smith dished out 20 assists and Mady Reed hustled her way to 13 digs.

Also it was Wethersfield over Williamsfield 25-12, 25-13. Alexis Little had five kills to lead Williamsfield in the loss. Gionna Ott had ten assists as well for the Bombers. The Geese are also (3-0) in the LTC. Finally, Annawan beat ROWVA 25-15, 25-17 and Princeville got tested by Stark County before the Princesses came home with a 25-20, 26-24 win.

Macomb beat Camp Point Central in a non-conference match, 25-16, 25-22.

Golf

The United Red Storm girls golf team improved to (9-3) on the season with a 222-236 win over Mid County at Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth. Erin Glisan led the Storm with a 50. She was joined in the scoring quartet by Emily Grodjesk’s 55, Haley Marshall’s 57 and Alex King’s 60. Mid County’s Elizabeth Whitford led all golfers with a 46. The Red Storm boys golf team fell to Mid County 194-211. Drew Brown shot a 49 for United. Caleb Copeland chipped in with a 51, Ian McVey carded a 55 and Andrew Fuller had a 56 for the Red Storm.

Junior High

The ICS 8th grade girls basketball team began their ICS Tournament with a 33-4 win over United. Mattie Gillen led ICS with nine points.
On today’s local sports schedule.

The Monmouth-Roseville 7th and 8th grade football teams traveled to Joy, Illinois last night for a makeup game against Mercer County. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday night but thunderstorms in the Quad City area led to the postponement. The 7th grade Titans lost to the Golden Eagles 16-14. Monmouth-Roseville answered an opening touchdown drive by Mercer County with an electrifying 70 yard touchdown on the ensuing kickoff. Mer Co answered with a 2nd quarter scoring drive to take a 16-8 lead. Monmouth-Roseville answered again with a 40 yard touchdown run by Jaylen Tuitt but the 2-pt conversion was stopped by the Golden Eagle defense. After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Monmouth-Roseville drove 85 yards to the Mercer County two yard line but the clock would run out on the Titans. The Monmouth-Roseville 8th Graders looked to get a split on the night but would fall to the Golden Eagles 26-12. Ashton Toal threw two touchdown passes for Monmouth-Roseville, one to Silas Braun and the other to Jerome Jackson.
