City Employees Discuss Latest Monmouth News

A trio of city employees stopped by to discuss current events and issues involving Monmouth; City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher, Mayor Rod Davies, and Police Chief Joe Switzer. Steinbrecher discussed Monday night’s City Council meeting, where an agreement was reached to allow the Fire Union to store an antique fire truck at the city’s north fire station.

“I think it’s great for the community. This was a 1912 Model T Fire Truck, and it does represent a good part of the history of Monmouth. I think it’s something that council members wanted to do,” Steinbrecher said.

Mayor Davies discussed a myriad of issues including a possible parking change on South 1st Street, and different ways to increase activity levels around the area. The suggestion for the improvement came from a group at the City Council meeting.

“One of the suggestions that came from that group was ‘Hey, could we make the 100 block of South 1st Street one-way South and put in diagonal parking?,’ which would greatly increase the number of parking spaces,” Davies said.

Davies also discussed the possibility of building a plaza where live music and events could go on, which would attract more customers to the 1st Street area and their businesses.

Police Chief Switzer touched on the emergency training that has been put into place for both Monmouth-Roseville and United’s school districts. He also wanted to remind citizens of Monmouth to be careful of kids traveling to and from school.

“There’s going to be a lot of kids – first day of school – running around town in the morning. Some of them may or may not know where they’re going, but everybody look out for kids walking down the sidewalk and possibly in the street,” Switzer said.
