Heat's Kirby Optimistic For 2017

The West Central Heat football team will open their season on the road at Cuba on Friday, Aug. 25th, at 7:00 p.m. Coming off a 3-6 season, second-year head coach Jason Kirby knows that in order for his team to succeed, he’ll need his leaders to step up and lead the charge.

“I don’t care what your driver’s license says,” Kirby said. “Anyone can be a leader. You lead by the example of how you carry yourself both in and out of practice. I think our sophomores, juniors, and seniors are all trying to lead our football team, and I think we’re improving because of that.”

Kirby knows the Heat reside in a strong Lincoln Trail Conference, but he believes the Heat’s skill position players in the backfield, along with a strong offensive line, will help the team surprise some people in 2017.

“I think our guys are going to be an exciting bunch of football players that really are playing together as group. They’re building each other up individually to the best that they can possibly be as a team. And I think they have a chip on their shoulder,” Kirby said.

Heat fans can get their first glimpse of the 2017 squad at their intrasquad scrimmage, which is set for Friday, Aug. 18th, at 5:00 p.m.
