Local high school and junior high sports update for Aug 21st, 2017

Golf
The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys golf team competed in the 43rd Annual Gary Saunders Invitational Golf Meet at the Macomb Country Club on Saturday. The Titans finished 9th out of 13 competing schools with a team total of 351 strokes. Monmouth-Roseville’s Nick Corman just finished out of the top-10 individuals with a round of 82. JC Sells shot an 85. They were joined by Reese Kane’s 90 and Lane Frieden’s 94. Hillsboro was the tournament champion with a team score of 314, beating Alleman by 14 strokes. The host Macomb Bombers were third with a 330.

The United Red Storm, Knoxville Blue Bullets, Williamsfield Bomber and Galesburg Silver Streaks boys golf teams got together for a quadrangular match at Bunker Links in Galesburg on Saturday. The host Silver Streaks won the meet with a team score of 322 to improve to (4-2) on the season. Williamsfield was (2-1) on the day with 352, United placed third with 393 going (1-2) for the meet and Knoxville was fourth with a 442, going (0-4). Galesburg’s Owen Hawkins was the meet medalist with a 73. He was joined by three other Streaks with scores below 85. Lucas Watson’s 82, Luke Bradburn’s 83 and Justin Endthohff’s 84 rounded out the winning team total for Galesburg. Austin Larson led Williamsfield with a 77. United’s four scoring players included Zach Marshall’s 86, Andrew Fuller’s 100, Drew Brown’s 102 and Dylan Hepner’s 105. Logan Thompson led Knoxville with a 90.

The Galesburg girls golf team was in Rock Falls for the Rocket Invite on Saturday. The Silver Streaks brought home the AA tournament title with a team score of 352, which was 71 strokes better than everyone else. Kirsten Osborn was the individual tournament champ with a 77. Also scoring for Galesburg was Rylee Chockley with an 84, Maitlyn Sanders with a 95 and Becca Watson had a round of 106.

Junior High
The United Red Storm junior high baseball team moved to (5-0) on the season with a 17-6 win over Bartonville/Oak Grove West on Saturday. Nolan Leffler and Parker Cassiday were each 2-for-3 to lead United. Leffler had a pair of doubles and drove in five RBIs.

The ICS junior high baseball team dropped a pair of game to Quincy Catholic on Saturday. The Trojans lost game one, 6-0, and game two 19-3. Aidan Parkins was 2-for-3 in the opener to lead ICS and Nick Lewis-Bresnahan was 1-for-2 with an RBI in the nightcap.

The Galesburg junior high cross country teams began their 2017 season on Saturday at the Metamora Redbird Invitational. Three girls earned medals in the open race, with Lombard seventh-grader Natasha Nickas leading the way in 6th place at 15:53. She was closely followed by Briana Admire (7th, 15:56) and Olivia Owen (10th, 15:59). Molly Pettit (31st) and Ivy Johnson (48th) rounded out the Galesburg girls’ top five.
The boys finished 12th of 19 schools in the varsity race as their top six runners crossed the finish line only 32 seconds apart. Luca Gomez was the first finisher for Galesburg in 48th place at 14:01, Andrew Peterson and Max Martinez each crossed at 14:20 for 62nd and 63rd place and Sam Satisky ran 14:22 for 65th. Rylee Harris was the team’s #5 runner in 14:30 (73rd) and Tim Cermak closed out the six-man pack at 14:33 in 76th place. Primo Moreno ran 17:26 as the #7 runner in the varsity race. First-year runner Isaac Admire was the top Galesburg finisher in the boys open at 16:40. Next race for Galesburg will be on Tuesday, August 22 at Brimfield. The junior high teams will host two home meets this fall at Lake Storey Park – Thursday, September 7 and their major invitational on Thursday, September 14.
