Local high school and junior high sports update for Aug 24th, 2017

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys soccer team opened their season with a 2-0 win over Illini Bluffs yesterday. Jaw Thang and Robert Lian scored the goals for Monmouth-Roseville.
Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan volleyball team moved to (2-0) on the season with a win over Mercer County in their home opener at Monmouth-Roseville High School. The Titan dominated set one, winning 25-6 but had to dig deep late in set two to get a 26-24 win. Kaylee Woodard hammered ten kills to go along with nine points and four digs. Camryn Jones served nine points and Delaney Woodard led Monmouth-Roseville in assists with ten. Monmouth-Roseville is at home again tonight, taking on Knoxville.
The United Red Storm volleyball team also improved their season record to (2-0) with a three set win over Western Big Six Conference, Alleman. The Red Storm got away with 20-25, 25-15, 25-13 win over the Pioneers. Ashton Chander served seven aces for United. Vada Gregory, Jerzi Johnson and Janelle King each totaled five kills. Baylee McKeown handed out 16 assists and Jordian Cook had 16 digs.
Golf

The United Red Storm boys and girls golf teams took on Elmwood on the Trojans home course of Maple Lane Country Club. The Red Storm boys won their match 184-192, led by meet medalist Zach Marshall’s 39. Evan Wynne contributed a score of 44. Other scorers for United included Andrew Fuller’s 50 and William Ornduff’s 51. The Red Storm girls were also victorious, winning 215-259. United’s Erin Glisan and Alex King were co-medalists for the match, both shooting 52’s. They were joined by Emily Grodjesk’s 55 and Paige McKeown’s 56.
The Galesburg Silver Streak girls golf team beat Rock Island on the Rock’s home course of Saukee Golf Course in the Quad Cities. The Streak’s 171-217 win was led by Kirsten Osborn’s 38. She was joined in the scoring column by Rylee Chockley’s 39, Maitlyn Sanders’ 40 and Halle Majdich’s 54.
Junior High

The ICS Trojans handed the United Red Storm their first loss of the season with a 10-4 win in Alexis. ICS broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the top of the third and four runs in the fourth inning. United out-hit ICS 7-5 but the Trojans took advantage of 13 base on balls handed out by Red Storm pitching. ICS’s Zach Almaguer led ICS with a 2-for-4 day at the plate. CJ Johnson had four RBIs for the Trojans as well, including a home run. United was led offensively by Austin Thompson’s 2-for-4 game. He also knocked in two runs. ICS improves to (4-1) on the season, while United falls to (5-1).
