MACOMB, Ill. – Thanks to the support of nearly 350 in attendance for the 28th annual Purple & Gold Auction on August 12, Western Illinois Athletics raised its highest total since 2007. The net profit from the event exceeded $55,000.

Funds from the event will go to help sponsor various projects for student-athletes, including the Purple & Gold scholarship and upgrades to the weight room in Western Hall.

“The Purple & Gold Auction enables Leatherneck Athletics to fund projects and initiatives for the betterment of our student-athletes. Thanks to the hard work of the committee and generous donations from countless businesses, the auction was a great success,” said Director of Athletics Matt Tanney. “We will continue to use Purple and Gold funds, much like the Leatherneck Club, to support the athletic and academic achievements of our talented student-athletes.”

The evening included a social, silent auction, and two $500 cash raffles. Sodexo catered the meal while the Lowderman Auction Company ran the live auction portion of the evening.

Some of the more popular items purchased that night included: a 2014 Club Car Precedent golf cart, autographed Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo Cubs jerseys, two Colorado vacation packages, VIP trips with WIU Athletics, a pheasant hunt for four in Wisconsin, two one-week stays in the Dominican Republic, and a VIP experience at the NASCAR Cup Series Chicagoland 400.

The student-athlete speeches were delivered by women’s basketball’s Emily Clemens, the reigning Summit League Player of the Year, and football’s Brett Taylor, the All-American linebacker who hails from Macomb. Numerous people volunteered time to help make the event another success, led by co-chairs John Biernbaum and Jerry Cremer.

“A lot of work goes into this event, and I want to thank all the people who volunteered, donated items, and attended this year’s auction,” said assistant director of athletics for development Michael Jones. “I especially want to thank Shelby McAvoy, our co-chairs John Biernbaum and Jerry Cremer, along with the entire Purple & Gold Committee for making the event a big success.”
