Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 27th, 2017

Golf

The Western Big Six Conference held their championship golf meet yesterday at Oakwood Country Club near the Quad Cities. On the girls side, Quincy is your 2017 team champion but Galesburg Silver Streak junior Kirsten Osborn is your individual champ. She carded a 4-over par 75. Osborn’s teammate Maitlyn Sanders was second with an 80, including a hole-in-one from the 132 yard number 14. The Streaks were not able to compete for a team title, which would have been their fourth straight, due to only having three golfers compete. Becca Watson and Rylee Chockley missed the meet with an illness and an injury. On the boys side, Quincy also won the team championship, with Galesburg taking third. Quincy’s TJ Wensing is the individual championship, shooting a 3-over par 74. Galesburg was led by Justin Endthoff’s 76, which was good enough for 2nd place. Lucas Watson shot an 81, finishing in a tie for 7th. Owen Hawkins’ 82 was good enough for 10th. Luke Bradburn rounded out the Silver Streak scoring with an 85.

Volleyball

It was a relatively quiet night on the volleyball court for our area high schools. The Knoxville Blue Bullets traveled to Farmington for a Prairieland Conference matchup. Farmington moves to (7-1) in league play with a 25-22, 25-22 victory. Knoxville drops to (3-3) in the Prairieland. Leading Knoxville was Shelby Shreeves with seven kills. She also handed out 13 assists.

Macomb beat BPC 25-12, 25-7 in a non-conference match in Bushnell. Haley Hood served for five points for BPC.

Cross Country

Monmouth-Roseville and United participated in the Macomb Invitational yesterday afternoon. In the girls division, Monmouth-Roseville placed 2nd as a team, with United finishing 11th. The Titan’s Arika Hofmann crossed the finish line in 5th. Jordan Copeland was 16th and Kara Fisher was 18th. For United, Olivia Bishop was 37th and Natalie Gillettte was 42nd. The Monmouth-Roseville was 4th as a team on the boy’s side. They were led by Riley Dulin’s 2nd place finish. His teammates, Carlos Serratos and Kevin Jurado was 12th and 14th respectively. For United Yovani Larios-Saavedra was 23rd.

The Prairieland Conference held their cross country championship meet yesterday at Lake Storey in Galesburg. the Elmwood Trojan claimed both the boys and girls team titles, with the Knoxville Blue Bullet girls coming in 2nd and the Knoxville boys placing 4th as a team. Individually, Lewistown’s Mackenzie Goldring won the girl’s side and Elmwood’s Cooper Hoffman is the boys titleist. For the Blue Bullet girls, Olivia Hall placed 9th. Her teammate Ainsley Buster was 11th and Mackenzie Pruett placed 13th. A-Town’s Natalie Kern led the Lady Tornadoes, crossing the finish line in 7th place. The Knoxville boys were led by Christian Hensley’s 12th place. He was joined by Dawson Hensley in 18th and Jake Johnson in 22nd. A-Town’s Andew Powell was 9th.

Junior High

In Junior High girls basketball, ICS swept United in both 7th and 8th grade games. The Trojan 7th grade won 45-16. Breck McVey & Ariaunnah Utzinger had 10 points each. Nyota Feza was leading scorer for United with 12. It was the ICS 8th grade 38-14 over United. Belle Thompson and Malia Killey had 13 points each for ICS.

In junior high cross country yesterday, the Galesburg contingent headed to Spring Lake in Macomb for the Macomb Invitational. The Galesburg girls placed third, led by Briana Admire and Olivia Owen’s medal-winning efforts. Admire placed 9th of 96 runners and Owen finished in 15th. Knoxville claimed the team title with 18 points. Galesburg’s Luca Gomez placed 8th of 129 runners in the boys race for the squad’s top finish of the meet as Galesburg was just 15 points shy of a trophy, placeing fourth. Sam Satisky finished two spots shy of the medals in 17th place. Canton claimed the boys team.

In junior high football, Galesburg’s seventh grade football team beat Moline John Deere 20-6 at Lombard Field in Galesburg. Noah Range ran for 89 yards and a TD. Mike Eiker chipped in with two touchdown receptions.

The Monmouth-Roseville 7th and 8th grade football teams were in Sherrard last night to take on the Tigers. The 7th grade Titans played hard with limited numbers in the second half due to some first half injuries but would eventually fall to the Tigers 28-0 to drop to (1-3) overall and (0-3) in the Prairieland Conference. The Monmouth-Roseville 8th grade earned a split on the night, beating Sherrard 20-0. Scoring-wise for the Titans was a Charlie Fletcher to Ben Anderson touchdown pass, a Michael Homan fumble recovery in the endzone and another endzone fumble recovery by Logan Bratcher. The Monmouth-Roseville 8th grade is now (3-1) overall and (3-0) in the Prairieland Conference.
