CSC Charger Volleyball Sweeps Highland, Set Up 1st-Place Showdown vs. Sauk Valley

Freeport, IL- The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team breezed through Highland on Tuesday, sweeping the Cougars 25-13, 25-11, 25-18 to set up a showdown for first place in the Arrowhead Conference later this week.

The Chargers (13-7, 4-1) have won 11 of their last 13 and will face conference leader, defending champion and 10th-ranked Sauk Valley at 6 p.m. Thursday at home with a chance to move into a tie atop the league standings. Sandburg is in search of its first Arrowhead title in volleyball since 1990.

The Chargers had little trouble dispatching the Cougars, getting seven kills apiece from Lexi Strange (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden), Josalyn Owens (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln) and Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin). Sandburg also had a strong outing from setter Emma Derry (Augusta, Ill./Southeastern), who recorded 21 assists, 11 digs and two aces.

Sophomore libero Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) also served two aces while totaling a team-best 22 digs. The Chargers also got six kills from Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Fulton), 12 assists from Camerin Huizenga (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) and 10 digs from Hannah Thompson (Blandinsville, Ill./West Prairie).
