Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 11th, 2017

Football

The Galesburg Silver Streak football team played a Saturday afternoon game in St. Louis. The long drive was worth it as the Streaks get a 59-0 win over Sumner, Missouri. Clark Hawkins hit Jacob Carl for a pair of touchdown passes and Deante Pulley had two rushing touchdowns.

 

Volleyball

West Central was the host of the Carl Sandburg College tourney in Galesburg. After going (3-1) in pool play, the United Red Storm claimed the title with a three-set thriller over Rockridge. The Red Storm dropped the first set 20-25 before winning the final two, 25-17, 16-14. Knoxville won the consolation championship with a 25-16, 25-13 victory over the host West Central Heat. Other area teams participating were the A-Town Tornadoes, who finished (2-2) on the weekend. Ridgewood was (1-3), BPC was (0-4) as was the ROWVA Tigers. Making the all-tournament team from our listening area was United’s Baylee McKeown, Carly Thompson and Vada Gregory. Corinne Booton from West Central and Payton Florine from A-Town. Knoxville had four girls make the team including Emily Lenz, Shelby Shreeves, Lauren Kavanaugh and Katie Hummel. BPC had Savannah Serven on the All-Tourney team and Ridgewood had Annie Althaus named by the tournament coaches as well.

The defending state champ West Prairie Cyclones placed third in the Jacksonville Crimson Invitational, going (2-3) on Saturday. Peyton Bowman and Cora Vyhnanek were named to the all-tournament team.

The Wethersfield Flying Geese went (4-0) on the their way to a Geneseo Tournament championship on Saturday. The Geese are now (13-0) on the season.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville boys soccer extended their unbeaten streak to nine matches with an 8-0 win over DePue on Saturday in Roseville. Chum Liang scored three goals and Gilberto Vazquez and Kyaw Thang each scored two goals for the (7-1-3) Titans. Edgar Mora picked up the shutout for Monmouth-Roseville.
Peoria’s Detweiler Park was the place for a huge cross country meet. The annual First to the Finish meet was run with many area schools involved. The Monmouth-Roseville boys and girls placed 31st as teams. Monmouth-Roseville’s Riley Dulin was the highest finisher for our area teams. He placed 15th. His teammate Carlos Serratos was 97th out of 590 total runners. West Central’s Freeman Shoemaker was 65th. A-Town’s Andrew Powell was 139th. On the girls side, Monmouth-Roseville’s Arika Hofmann was 32nd and A-Town’s Natalie Kern was 91st out of 461 runners. Galesburg’s Kaitlyn Pendergast was 31st in the Class 2A race.

Cross Country

Peoria’s Detweiler Park was the place for a huge cross country meet. The annual First to the Finish meet was run with many area schools involved. Galesburg’s Kaitlyn Pendergast was 31st in the Class 2A race as the Silver Streak girls were 30th. Emma St. George was 90th overall. The Silver Streak boys placed 32nd in 2A with Mark Frenster placing 148th of 492 runners. John Peterson was 166th. The Monmouth-Roseville boys and girls placed 31st as teams in class 1A. Monmouth-Roseville’s Riley Dulin was the highest finisher for our area teams. He placed 15th. His teammate Carlos Serratos was 97th out of 590 total runners. Knoxville took part in the PORTA Invite on Saturday. The Blue Bullets girls placed 8th and the boys were 6th. Christian and Dawson Hensley were the top finishers on the boys side, placing 15th and 19th respectively. Olivia Hall was 23rd and Ainsley Buster was 26th for the Knoxville girls.

Swimming and Diving

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls swimmers and divers placed 5th of 8 teams in the Rock Island Relays. Mary Sweesy was 2nd in the 1 meter dive.

Golf

The Galesburg girls golf team was in Normal for the Normal Community Invitational at Ironwood Golf Club. Maitlyn Sanders’ 85 led the Silver Streaks to a 10th place finish. Kirsten Osborn added an 86.

The Silver Streak boys were in Metamora, where they finished 10th as a team. Lucas Watson’s nice round of 79 was good enough for 9th individually.

Junior High

The United Red Storm, West Central Heat and ICS Trojans junior high baseball teams finished up play in the West Prairie Invite in Colchester on Saturday. The Red Storm won the consolation championship with a 10-4 win over West Central. Austin Thompson and Abel Wilson was each 2-for-3 for United. AJ Jenks knocked in a pair of runs. Thompson and Caleb Copeland combined for the pitching win. Brady McGraw was 2-for-2 for West Central. Kaiden Droste blasted a home run for the Heat. ICS took 4th place as they dropped a 10-1 decision to LaHarpe/Dallas City. CJ Johnson and Cormaic Flynn got the only two hits for the Trojans
