Volleyball
The Monmouth-Roseville Titan volleyball team traveled to Macomb for a West Central Conference match against their bitter rival Bombers. The Titans came home with a 25-20, 25-15 victory to move to (3-1) in conference play and (11-6) overall. It was a night for the Woodard sisters once again, as Kaylee led the winners in kills with 11 and Delaney led in points with 11, including two aces. Delaney also tied with Mackenzie Connell in assists with nine. Connell led in digs with nine. Macomb falls to (1-1) in the WCC.
The West Central Heat beat another West Central Conference team in a non-conference matchup. The Heat defeat West Hancock 25-23, 25-10. Danyel McKune filled up the stat sheet with four kills, three blocks and three digs for West Central. Corrine Booton chipped in with eight digs and seven points. Tori Olson led the Heat with 11 assists.
It was Knoxville over Mercer County 25-20, 25-16. Alis Bickell led the Blue Bullets with five kills. Katie Hummel hustled seven digs and Shelby Shreeves dished out 11 assists.
Finally ROWVA got its first win of the 2017 campaign with a quick 25-4, 25-2 win over Rivermont Collegiate in Oneida. Sarah Hennenfent smashed four kills and Jaylen Haynes handed out four assists for the winners.
Cross Country
The Monmouth-Roseville boys and girls cross country teams were in Quincy for the Running Raider Invite. The Titan girls finished 10th as a team, led by Arika Hofmann’s 10th place. The Titan boys were led by Riley Dulin’s 2nd place finish.
Golf
The Monmouth-Roseville boys golf team joined United and Knoxville at Gibson Woods in Monmouth for a triangular meet. The Titans came away with two wins with a team total of 179. United scored 207 and Knoxville carded a 223. Nick Corman was the meet medalist with a 41. He was joined in the scoring column by Lane Frieden’s 43, Aaron Blindt’s 45 and Reese Kane’s 50. United was led by Zach Marshall’s 48, Evan Wynne’s 52, Drew Brown’s 53 and Andrew Fuller’s 54. Knoxville’s Daniel and George Dredge with a 52 and 61 respectively.
The United Red Storm girls golf team hosted Knoxville at Gibson Woods as well with the Red Storm getting a 205-225 win. Erin Glisan led United with a 48. She was followed by Paige McKeown’s 49 and Emily Grodjesk’s 50. Kaylyn Stearns led Knoxville with a 53 and Hollan Wright and Dedra Ratermann carded a pair of 54’s.
The Galesburg boys golf team scored a team total of 163 to beat both Mercer County and Annawan/Wethersfield in a triangular at Kewanee Dunes. Owen Hawkins was the meet medalist with a 38. He was joined by Lucas Watson’s 39, Luke Bradburn’s 43 and Justin Endthoff’s 45.
Junior High
Area junior high baseball teams began postseason play with regional matchups. At Monmouth’s Field of Dreams, the ICS Trojans had no problem with Hamilton, winning 15-0 in three innings in a Class 1A matchup. Cormaic Flynn was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Also knocking in two runs was Aidan Parkins, Kittner McVey and Jake Steele. Flynn went all three innings on the mound for ICS, giving up no hits. The Trojans advance to play LaHarpe/Dallas City at 10:00 am on Saturday in Bartonville.
In Alexis, the United Red Storm won a 4-1 Class 2A contest over Camp Point Central. Austin Thompson led United going 2-for-3 at the plate. Parker Cassiday had two RBIs for the Red Storm. Cassiday and Nolan Leffler combined for the pitching win for United, who will take on Nauvoo-Colusa on Saturday at 10:00 am in Mendon.
The West Central also advanced in Class 2A play with a 9-4 win over Mendon Unity. Kaiden Droste continued his hot season with a 2-for-3 day. Droste smashed a home run and drove in three runs. Brady McGraw was 3-for-3 for the Heat. Ross Vancil and Bryce Bigger each garnered a pair of hits. Four West Central pitchers combined for the win. The Heat will now play the second game on Saturday in Mendon, following the United/Navoo-Colusa contest, at noon against Abingdon-Avon.
Junior High girls basketball got started for the Churchill Blue Streaks last night as the 8th grade turned a 20-2 halftime lead into a 33-8 win over Orion. Carlie Thompson and Abby Davidson led the Streaks with six point apiece. The Churchill 7th grade also earned a tight 26-24 win over the Chargers. Hannah Dillbeck led the Blue Streaks with 16 points.
The Monmouth-Roseville Titan 7th and 8th grade football teams opened up Prairieland Conference play at home against Mercer County. The 7th grade dropped a 12-6 decision to the Golden Eagles. Jerome Jackson got the Titans on the board first with a 20 yard touchdown run. That would be all the scoring for Monmouth-Roseville, however, as Mercer County scores the final 12 points of the ballgame. The 7th graders are now (1-1) on the season. The Titan 8th graders beat Mercer County 22-0 in the nightcap. Charlie Fletcher scored first for Monmouth-Roseville, as his 9 yard run to paydirt gave the Titans a 6-0 lead. Fletcher hit Zemi Ismaili with a touchdown pass for the second touchdown. Derek Chandler’s 5 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter capped the scoring for the Titans, who improve to (1-1) overall and (1-0) in the Prairieland.
