Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 14th, 2017

Volleyball

It was the first full night of volleyball in the Lincoln Trail Conference last night as 10 of the 11 teams were in action. The United Red Storm hosted the Stark County Rebels at the Fieldhouse at United High School. The Red Storm swept the Rebels 25-18, 25-18.

The West Central Heat dropped their first league to undefeated Wethersfield at home 25-12, 25-10. Danyel McKune, Corinne Booton and Lacey Bigger all tied for the team lead in kills for the Heat with two each. Tori Olson handed out four assists and she also tied for the team lead in digs with Caitlin Good with five. Wethersfield is now (14-0) overall on the season.

Elsewhere in the LTC, it was Williamsfield over ROWVA in straight sets, 25-15, 25-18…..Galva loses to Mercer County 25-20, 25-20 and Princeville beats Annawan 25-21, 25-13.

In non-conference play, after losing the first set, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans beat Ridgewood in three sets, 23-25, 25-11, 25-9. The Titans were led by Carly Gillen’s 15 kills and 2.5 blocks. Kaylee Woodard had five digs and scored 21 points, including five aces. Delaney Woodard handed out 13 assists to lead Monmouth-Roseville. Ridgewood’s Ali Lambin dished out 12 assists to lead her team in that category. Annie Althaus led in kills and blocks with five in each.

Also, it was Elmwood over the Bushnell-Prairie City Spartans in Prairieland Conference play, 25-20, 25-22. BPC was led by Haley Hood’s four kills and seven points. SaVannah Serven handed out three assists for the Spartans.

Golf

In area golf, Valley View Golf Course in Cambridge, the Knoxville Blue Bullet girls took second in a three-team meet with Orion and Sherrard. Nikki Schmidt’s 39 was the low individual score for Sherrard. Knoxville was led by Hollan Wright’s 56 and Kaylyn Stearns’ round of 67.

At Lake Calhoun Country Club in Toulon, the West Central Heat boys were 3rd in a triangular with Ridgewood and the host Stark County Rebels. Ridgewood’s Thomas Bumann was the meet medalist with a 40. He was joined by Levi Swanson’s 43 and Bill Bumann’s 44. West Central was led by Dylan Dermer’s 58, Logan Shirey’s 65 and Maddie McBride’s 69.

The United Red Storm girls golf team took on Erie and Riverdale at Erie Country Club. The Red Storm placed second with a team score of 226. Erie shot a 186 and Riverdale, a 239. Leading United was Erin Glisan’s 52. She was joined in the scoring column by Gabby Neice’s 55, Paige McKeown’s 58 and Alex King’s 61.

Soccer

Despite outshooting the Macomb Bombers 32-3, the Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys soccer team’s 10-game unbeaten streak came to an end with a 1-0 loss in Macomb. The Bombers scored on a penalty kick in the game’s 3rd minute to get the win.

Junior High

Galesburg junior high cross country runners Briana Admire, Natasha Nickas and Olivia Owen ran to individual medals on Tuesday at the Warrior Invitational in Germantown Hills. Admire finished the 2-mile course in 14:41, just three seconds off her season-best time, to place 7th in the girls open race. Nickas (15:13) and Owen (15:20) closely followed with career PRs in 11th and 18th place, respectively. Another pair of season PRs were posted by the team’s fourth and fifth runners, Ivy Johnson (16:28) and Addison Peck (16:30). Seven of the nine Galesburg girls posted season-best times.
In the boys varsity race, Sam Satisky set a new team record for sixth-graders with his time of 13:31. He crossed in 73rd place, the third Galesburg boy to finish. The team’s top five runners all ran career PRs, led by Luca Gomez in 33rd at 12:43. Max Martinez ran 13:08 for 60th place, Andrew Peterson finished one second behind Satisky in 13:32, and Rylee Harris broke 14 minutes for the first time at 13:50. In all, nine of the 14 Galesburg athletes ran their fastest times of the season and Galesburg finished in 13th place of 19 schools.
The annual Galesburg Junior High Cross Country Invitational is today at Lake Storey Park! The event will feature four races, starting at 4:00 PM with the girls varsity division. Eighteen schools will be represented at this year’s meet.
