Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 18th, 2017

Cross Country

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan, Knoxville Blue Bullet, A-Town Tornado and Galesburg Silver Streak cross country teams were among 12 schools participating in the Dunlap Invitational on Saturday. The Silver Streaks boys and girls were the highest finishing teams of those four, with the girls placing fourth and the boys finishing fifth. The top runners for Galesburg was Kaitlyn Pendergast on the girls side with a 9th place finish and Mark Frenster was 11th for the boys. Lexi Herr also got a top-20 place with a 15th as well for Galesburg. Our area’s top individual finisher was Monmouth-Roseville’s Riley Dulin who crossed the finish line in 6th place. Monmouth-Roseville’s girls team placed 9th and their top finisher was Arika Hofmann with an 18th place. The Knoxville boys were 11th and the Blue Bullet girls were 12th. They were led by Christian Hensley’s 33rd place for the boys and Olivia Hall’s 46th for the girls. A-Town did not have enough boys or girls to compete as a team but had Andrew Powell finish in 39th on the boys side and Natatlie Kern’s 50th place on the girls side.

Volleyball

The Orion Chargers won the Judy Richmond Classic at Mercer County High School in Aledo. The Chargers beat Ashton-Franklin-Center in straight sets, 25-16, 25-12. Sherrard defeated Illini West for 3rd.

West Prairie was in Mt. Pulaski for the 16-team Fall Festival. The defending Class 1A state champ Cyclones reprensented themselves well in a field loaded with 2A and 3A schools with a (3-2) weekend concluding in a bronze pool championship, beating Eastland 25-18, 25-22.

Elmwood claimed the title of the Princeville Varsity Tournament Fall Classic. The Trojan’s got a 25-17, 25-18 win over Brimfield in the final game. The hosts, Princeville High School, beat Annawan for 3rd place. Williamsfield defeated Stark County for 5th.

Lewistown’s 25-22, 25-11 win over Farmington ended up being the championship game of the 5-team, round-robin Fulton County Tournament hosted South Fulton at VIT High School. Canton placed third.

The Galesburg Silver Streaks traveled to Quincy for a pair of Western Big Six Conference matches against Rock Island and Alleman. The Streaks were victorious in both, beating Rock Island 25-22, 25-13 but having a little more difficulty with the Pioneers before getting a 20-25, 25-20, 25-23 win.

Golf

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys and girls golf teams both played tournaments on Saturday. The Silver Streak girls placed 7th out of 19 teams and were led by Kaitlyn Osborn’s 79, which was good enough to tie for 10th place overall. The boys were in Pekin for the Dragon Invitational and placed 8th of 24 schools. Galeburg was led by Owen Hawkin’s 83.

Tennis

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls tennis team hosted their annual Invitational on Saturday at Art Fish Courts. Galesburg placed 8th in a stacked field of schools. Jacobs was the team champ with Alleman and Geneseo in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Adyson Eastburg was the highest individual finisher for the Streaks with a fifth place #2 singles and Taylor Hostens was 7th in the #1 singles bracket.

Soccer

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys soccer team fell to Limestone at Van Dyke Field 2-1 on Saturday evening

Swimming and Diving

Galesburg High School’s girls swimmers and divers ended a busy weekend for Silver Streak sports with a 7th place finish in the Normal Community Iron Invitational. Individually, Lauren Pio was 6th in the 100 yard breastroke and 7th in the 100 yard freestyle. Ari Bailey was 7th in the 1 meter diving competition.

Junior High

The ICS, United, West Central and A-Town junior high baseball teams all played regional semi-finals on Saturday. The ICS Trojans will play for a Class 1A regional title today in Colchester and Friendway Park as they defeated LaHarpe/Dallas City 4-3. Kittner McVey led the Trojans at the plate with a 2-for-2 day. Cormaic Flynn, Aidan Parkins and CJ Johnson all combined for the pitching win. Flynn went six innings, giving up five hits with eight strikeouts. Johnson came on with one out in the bottom of the 7th to get the save. ICS will play Carthage at 4:30 this afternoon for the regional title in Colchester.

United fell to top-seeded Nauvoo-Colusa 8-1 in the Class 2A regional in Mendon to end their season. Colin Jenks, Parker Cassidy, Abel Wilson and AJ Jenks had the only hits for the Red Storm.

Also in Mendon, A-Town beat West Central, 11-1.
