Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 19th, 2017

Golf

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans beat Mercer County 163-174 in a dual match at Hawthorn Ridge in Aledo. Monmouth-Roseville’s Nick Corman was the meet medalist with an even par 36. Lane Frieden shot a 38, Reese Kane carded a 43 and Aaron Blindt rounded out the scoring with a 46.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys hosted Moline at Bunker Links in Galesburg. The Streaks won the match 164-175. They were led by Lucas Watson’s 37 and Justin Endthoff’s 40.

The Silver Streak girls were also at home at Lake Bracken for a triangular with Geneseo and Erie. The Streaks won both matches, shooting a team score of 178. Maitlyn Sanders’s 39 led Galesburg in her final home regular season match. Kirsten Osborn added a 41.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys soccer team got back in the win column with a 3-1 win over Kewanee in Roseville. Robert Lian scored a pair of goals for the Titans, while Grego Massengo had the other tally. With the victory, the Titans improve to (9-3-2) on the season.

Volleyball

The United Red Storm defeated Annawan in three sets 23-25, 25-22, 25-22 in Lincoln Trail Conference play. Vada Gregory led the Red Storm in kills with 20. Baylee McKeown led in assists with 32 and Jordian Cook hustled her way to 26 digs.

The West Central Heat fell to Ridgewood in three sets 26-24, 22-25, 25-22. Corinne Booton had 9 kills for the Heat. Tori Olson handed out 31 assists and Megan Schaley totaled 18 digs. Destiny Kidd led Ridgewood with 10 kills and Ali Lambin led in assists with 21. Jenna Stromquist had 17 digs.

Elsewhere, it was Princeville over Galva 25-16, 27-25…..Wethersfield defeated Mercer County 25-15, 25-14 and Stark County over Williamsfield 25-23, 25-15.

In Prairieland Conference action, it was Farmington over Brimfield 25-10, 25-20 and Rushville/Industry beating Peoria Heights 25-11, 25-9.

In the West Central Conference, the Macomb Bombers won a road match at West Hancock 25-11, 25-9.

Tennis

The Galesburg girls tennis team was shutout at Sterling Newman 5-0.

Junior High

For the 3rd straight year, the ICS Trojan junior high baseball team claimed a Class 1A Regional Championship yesterday in Colchester with a 5-4 win over Carthage. The Trojans, now (11-6) on the season, move on to Sectional play on Saturday against (10-8) Jacksonville Our Saviour. As of today, the site of this game has not been determined but it will be at 11:00am. Should the Trojans win on Saturday, they’ll move on to the state finals in East Peoria on September 29th. After giving up a run in the top of the first inning last night, ICS responded with a 3-spot in the bottom half of the frame. Aidan Parkins’ RBI single scored Zach Almaguer for the first tally and then Cormaic Flynn brought home Parkins with a triple to right field. Kittner McVey’s sacrifice fly scored Flynn in the next at bat and the Trojans would not trail the rest of the game. McVey would score the fourth run in the bottom of the 3rd and Nick Lewis-Bresnahan would score the Trojan’s final run of the game the following inning. Almaguer went 3-for-3 to lead the ICS offense. Flynn added two more hits. CJ Johnson went six innings to get the pitching win, giving up three hit with four strikeouts. Parkins pitched the 7th inning to get the save.

The Lombard Zephyr junior high girls 7th and 8th grade basketball teams swept ROWVA at home last. The Zephyrs won the 7th grade game 28-18 behind Caprie Ferguson’s 10 points. Lombard defeated the Tigers 40-25 in the 8th grade contest. Abby Endthoff’s 15 points led the winners in that one.
