Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 20th, 2017

Volleyball

In an important volleyball match in the Prairieland Conference, the defending Class 1A state champ West Prairie Cyclones survived three match points to escape with a three-set, 25-13, 21-25, 28-26 victory over Elmwood in Sciota. The win allows the Cyclones to remain in first place in the conference standings at (6-0). Elmwood falls to (3-3).

Also in the Prairieland, Lewiston also remained unbeaten in league play at (4-0) with a 25-20, 25-12 win over Rushville-Industry, who falls to (4-3).

North Fulton dropped its first set to Havana 25-18 before coming back to win the final two sets 25-23, 25-20 to go to (3-2) in the Prairieland. With the loss, Havana remains win-less in league play at (0-5).

A-Town beat BPC is straight sets in the final Prairieland match of the night, 25-11, 25-22. Leading A-Town was Payton Florine with seven kills and 15 points. SaVannah Serven led BPC with six kills. Mollie Bartlett had 11 digs and seven assists for the Spartans. A-Town is (2-2) in the Prairieland with BPC falling to (1-4).

The Galesburg Silver Streaks fell to Moline in Western Big Six Conference action, 25-19, 25-17. The Streaks were led by Emily Meinert’s five kills and four digs. Megan Lingafelter’s five assists and Yvonne Mixon’s three blocks led in those categories as well. Galesburg is now (7-7) overall and (2-2) in the Big Six. Moline improves to (15-5) and (4-1).

Macomb helped out the Monmouth-Roseville Titans in the West Central Conference standings as the Bombers gave Illini West their first loss in conference play with a 26-24, 29-27 win at home. The Bombers are now (3-1) in the WCC. The Chargers fall to (2-1). The Titans are (3-1) and will play (0-4) West Hancock at home tomorrow night.

Golf

At Gibson Woods in Monmouth, the United Red Storm boys lost to a red-hot Ridgewood Spartan quartet, 153-184. The Spartan’s team score sets a new school 9-hole record. Thomas Bumann’s 35 was the meet medalist score. Levi Swanson’s 37, Riley Nelson’s 38 and Ganon Greenman’s 43 led Ridgewood. United was led by Drew Brown’s 44. Andrew Fuller and Zach Marshall tied with a pair of 46’s and Dhylan Hepner carded a 48.

Soccer

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys soccer team played another thriller last night in Moline. The Streaks tie with the Moline Maroons 0-0 in double overtime. The Streaks are now (6-3-2) on the season.

Swimming and Diving

The Silver Streak girls swimmers and divers beat Pekin 99-84. Individual first place finishers for Galesburg included Ari Bailey in the 1 meter dive, Emma Hallberg in the 100 yard freestyle, Lauren Pio in the 200 freestyle, Haylee Cox in the 500 freestyle and Hailey Glasnovich in the 100 breastroke. The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Pio, Cox, Glasnovic and Emma Hallberg also touched the wall first for Galesburg.

Tennis

In high school tennis, Galesburg lost a close match to United Township 5-4 at home. Getting wins for Galesburg was Adyson Eastburg in #2 singles, Regan Mudd in #4 singles and Tiara Pendleton in #5 singles. Mudd and Gwendolyn Allison teamed up for Galesburg’s lone doubles win at #2.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville junior high 7th and 8th grade girls basketball teams got their seasons started last night with a home date against Macomb. The Titan 7th grade falls 37-10 in the opener. The 8th grade also lost to Macomb, 36-16. Jayda Brown-Dodd led Monmouth-Roseville in scoring with eight points. Megan Noel chipped in with four points. Monmouth-Roseville will host A-Town tomorrow night.

The Lombard junior high girls basketball teams split a pair of games against Orion, with the 7th grad losing a close game 34-31. Leading the Zephyrs in scoring was Caprie Ferguson with 21 points. The Lombard 8th grade won 34 to 12 over the Chargers. Lombard’s leading scorer was Mariella Snell with 10 points.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan 8th grade football team defeated Knoxville in a defensive battle 6-0 in Knoxville.

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team found out yesterday that they will indeed host their Sectional game on Saturday against Jacksonville Our Saviour. The game will be played at the Field of Dreams in Monmouth at 11:00 in the morning.
