Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 25th, 2017

Cross Country

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan cross country team hosted their annual Titan Invite at Monmouth Park on Saturday morning. Monmouth-Roseville’s Riley Dulin was the boys individual champion, with his teammate Kevin Jurado placing 11th. United’s Yovanni Laariis-Saavedra was 26th. On the girls side, Monmouth-Roseville finished 3rd as a team and were led by Arika Hofmann’s 4th place finish. Jordan Copeland also medaled for the Titans, placing 15th. United was led by Olivia Bishop’s 34th place.

Galesburg traveled to the Peoria Invite. The Silver Streak boys were eighth and the girls placed 10th. Mark Frenster led Galesburg with a 35th-place. John Peterson took 49th.Kaitlyn Pendergast finished 14th overall to lead the Galesburg girls. Lexi Herr was 18th.

Golf

United High School hosted the United Golf Open at Gibson Woods in Monmouth. The Red Storm girls shot a team total of 442 to win their side. They were led individually by Erin Glisan’s 2nd place. Pagie McKeown finished right behind her in 3rd. Their teammate’s Alex King, Emily Grodjesk, Gabby Neice and Haley Marshall placed 5th-8th respectively. On the boys side, United placed 4th out of 9 teams. The Red Storm was led by Zach Marshall’s 83, good enough for 8th. Evan Wynne joined Marshall in the top 10 with a score of 85, good enough for 10th. Mercer County won the boys team title.

The Galesburg High School boys and girls golf teams hosted the Streak Invitational on Saturday at Bunker Links. The Streak boys were fourth and the Galesburg girls placed sixth. Owen Hawkins was the meet medalist for the boys. He shot a 2-under par 69. His Silver Streak teammate, Luke Watson finished in a tie for 3rd with a 73. The Galesburg girls were led by Maitlyn Sanders’ 3rd place finish. She shot a round of 79. Rylee Chockley was 9th with a score of 85.

Volleyball

In volleyball action over the weekend, Knoxville High School hosted a tournament involving many area teams. The Wethersfield Flying Geese rolled through the tournament with a (3-0) record in pool play and then topping Knoxville, 25-17, 25-12 in the championship game. The Geese are now (20-0) on the season and have dropped only one set all season. Knoxville took second with a record of (2-1-1) for the day. West Central beat Kewanee for 5th place. The Heat went (2-2) in the tournament. The A-Town Tornadoes were winless at (0-4) but did have Payton Florine make the all-tournament team. Knoxville had Emily Lenz and Shelby Shreeves make the all-tourney team. West Central’s Danyel McKune made the 10-person list as well. Wethersfield had Brittney Litton and Tess Anderson on the team.

The Galesburg Silver Streak volleyball team went (3-1) in the Burlington Invitational round-robin tournament on Saturday, finishing the day in 2nd place. The Streaks defeated Davis County and Mt. Pleasant in straight sets and also getting a win over Burlington before losing to Fairfield in their last match of the day. Hannah Huppenbauer led Galesburg with 31 kills on the day.

Tennis

The Silver Streak girls tennis team placed third as a team in the Peoria Invite. They were led by the #1 doubles team of Reagan Mudd and Mackenzie Williams. They went (2-2) on the day.

Swimming and Diving

The Galesburg Silver Streak swimmers and divers were second out of three schools competing at Mustain Pool on the Galesburg High School campus on Saturday. Maroon was the meet winner with Peoria Richwoods in third. Lauren Pio was the top individual finisher for the Silver Streaks. She touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle and 100 yard backstroke. The Galesburg 200 medley relay team of Pio, Hailey Glasnovich, Haylee Cox and Kaylyn Dane was also first in their race.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team will play in the Class 1A IESA state finals in East Peoria this weekend as the Trojans claimed a sectional championship on Saturday afternoon at the Field of Dreams in Monmouth. ICS defeated Jacksonville Our Saviour 4-3. The Trojans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat on an RBI double by Cormaic Flynn, scoring CJ Johnson. Flynn would later score on an error and single by Kittner McVey. ICS would extend the lead to 3-0 in the second inning. Nick Lewis-Bresnahan would smack a 1-out double and later come across the plate on a double steal. Jacksonville put their first run on the board in the bottom of the 4th but ICS responded with what would eventually be the winning run with a tally in the top of the 6th as Flynn scored his second run of the game. Despite giving up two runs in the bottom of the 6th, the Trojans hold on and advance to East Peoria on Friday with the 4-3 victory. Flynn leads the ICS offense, going 2-for-3, and scoring those two runs. He also gets the pitching win going six innings, giving up three hits with nine strikeout. Johnson came on in the bottom of the 7th to get the save, striking out two of the three batters he faced. The Trojans will now take on (6-7) Royal Prairieview Ogden at 4:00 at the Eastside Center in East Peoria on Friday afternoon.
