Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Sept. 5th, 2017

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys soccer team ran their unbeaten streak to six matches as they went (3-0-1) in the 13th annual East Peoria Raider Classic over the weekend. The Titans defeated Decatur Eisenhower 11-0 and tied Lincoln 3-3 on Friday and then beat the host Raiders 3-0 and Peoria Manual 5-0 on Saturday. Monmouth-Roseville was led by Gilberto Vazquez’s six goals and Kyaw Thang’s four scores. Vazquez, Erick Suarez, Alan Ayala and Genaro Arteaga all made the all-tournament team.

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville volleyball team also headed east to Limestone High School for the Limestone Invitational on Saturday. The Titans would go (2-3) for the day, beating Washington and Springfield East and losing to Richwoods twice and eventual tournament champ Bradley-Bourbonais. Carly Gillen and Kaylee Woodard were named to the all-tournament team.

The Galesburg Silver Streak volleyball team was in Quincy for the Blue Devil Early Bird Tournament. The Streaks would go (3-2) on the day beating the Quincy JV, East St. Louis and West Burlington. They lost to Belleville West and Pekin, who would eventually finish 1st and 2nd respectively.

Golf

The Monmouth-Roseville, United and Knoxville boys golf teams took part in the Mercer County Invitational at Hawthorn Ridge Golf Course in Aledo on Saturday. Monmouth-Roseville placed third out of 10 schools. They were led by Nick Corman’s 2nd overall individual finish. Corman shot a round of 79. Also scoring for the Titans was Aaron Blindt with an 87 and JC Sells and Lane Frieden’s 88’s. United placed 7th led by Zach Marshall’s 18th place score of 91. Evan Wynne chipped in with a 94. Knoxville was 10th as a team with top-scorer of Logan Thompson’s round of 101. Ridgewood won the tournament and were led by Thomas Bumann’s meet medalist score of 77. The United girls golf team placed 7th and Knoxville was 5th. Hollan Wright’s 102 was good enough for 9th. Paige McKeown led United with a 115 for 23rd place. Her teammate, Alex King shot a 117 for 25th.

Swimming and Diving

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls swimming and diving team placed third at the Macomb Invite on Saturday. Hailey Glasnovich won the 100 yard backstroke. She also placed third in the 100 freestyle and was a part of the 2nd place 200 medley Relay team, combining with Lauren Pio, Haylee Cox and Abby Cermak.
The Galesburg High School boys and girls cross country teams hosted the annual Silver Streak Invitational on Saturday at Lake Storey. The Streak girls placed 6th as a team, with the Galesburg boys placing 10th. The girls were led by Kaitlyn Pendergast was 13th overall, followed by Lexi Herr in 16th. For the Silver Streak boys, Mark Frenster was 26th and John Peterson was 29th.
