CSC Charger Volleyball Goes (2-2) at Iowa Central Invite

The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team split four matches over the weekend at the Iowa Central Invite, going 1-1 on both Friday and Saturday.

The Chargers (19-11) lost in four sets to Highland (Kan.) to open the tournament Friday before picking up a five-set win over Iowa Lakes. Sandburg began Saturday with a sweep of North Iowa Area before dropping a five-setter against the host Tritons, who are ranked 17th in the country.

Josalyn Owens (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln) had a team-leading 10 kills in Sandburg’s 28-26, 22-25, 25-13, 25-21 loss to Highland, which had fallen out of the national rankings earlier in the week. Emma Derry (Augusta, Ill./Southeastern) had 20 assists for the Chargers, and Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) had 38 digs.

Sandburg rallied to take the last two sets against Iowa Lakes in a 21-25, 25-18, 16-25, 25-22, 15-10 victory to finish Friday’s action. Derry handed out a career-high 50 assists in the victory, while adding 14 digs. Hannah Thompson (Blandinsville, Ill./West Prairie) notched 18 kills and 19 digs for Sandburg, and Lexi Strange (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) also had double-double, with 11 kills and 10 digs. Owens put down 16 kills in the win, and Vetter had a team-high 32 digs.

Sandburg cruised to a 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 sweep of NIACC to begin Saturday, with Owens delivering a team-best 12 kills. Derry had 32 assists, Vetter 14 digs and Thompson three aces for the Chargers.

Sandburg nearly came back to beat Iowa Lakes after dropping the first two sets, eventually falling 25-19, 25-16, 20-25, 20-25, 15-11 in the tournament finale. Thompson had 13 kills and 14 digs to pace the Chargers, and Owens added 11 kills. Derry’s 32 digs gave her an average of 33.5 per match for the weekend, and she also recorded 15 digs. Vetter’s 24 digs led the Chargers defensively, as she averaged 27.0 per contest over the weekend.

Sandburg will close out its regular season home schedule this week by hosting Highland at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Arrowhead Conference finale and Southeastern (Iowa) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday for Sophomore Night.
