GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team showed no rust after a week off in a 25-10, 25-15, 25-7 Arrowhead Conference sweep of Kishwaukee on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (14-8, 5-2) trailed for just three points in the entire match, dispatching the Kougars (1-18, 0-7) in just under an hour. Sandburg, which entered the night tied for second in the conference with Black Hawk, is two games back of league leader Sauk Valley with three matches remaining.

The Chargers got contributions from up and down the roster as every player saw time on the court. Sophomore Lexi Strange (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) led the attack with 12 kills, while Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) added eight kills and two of Sandburg’s nine aces.

Haley Stevenson (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) had a team-best three aces, and Helena Wyant (Toulon, Ill./Stark County) served up two. Emma Derry (Augusta, Ill./Southeastern) dished out 25 assists, and libero Adre Vedder (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) had 13 digs.

Three straight kills from Strange opened a seven-point run that staked the Chargers to an 8-2 lead in the first set. Anna Schierer (LaFayette, Ill./Stark County) had a block and a kill during a 5-0 run that closed the second set for Sandburg. The Chargers took the last six points of the match behind the service of freshman Kylie Stineman (New Boston, Ill./Mercer County), who had an ace during the stretch.

Sandburg will be out of action for another week before taking on Monmouth JV at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in Monmouth.
