Knox College QB Matt McCaffrey

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire football team suffered an overtime, one-point loss to Cornell on Homecoming.

Knox (4-4, 1-3 MWC) battled back and forth with the visiting Rams, but in the end lost on a failed two-point conversion.

The Prairie Fire struck first in this one when Matt McCaffrey hit an open Malik Hamilton for an 85-yard score. Cornell responded with two touchdowns of their own to build a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. Knox reeled off two scores of their own, a pass from McCaffrey to Kobe Shutter and a McCaffrey rushing touchdown, to retake the lead. The Rams took the lead late in the first half with a field goal, but Jesus Flores hit one of his own as time expired to knot the score up at 24-24 at halftime. Cornell picked up the first score of the second half on a run play, but Knox would again respond when McCaffrey and Shutter teamed up for another pass play. The Rams scored quickly in the fourth quarter, but Knox again found a way to tie it up when Joey Auger rushed for a five-yard score. The Prairie Fire got the ball first in overtime and looked to be down and out with a 4th and 10 from the 25-yard line, but McCaffrey found Hunter Lee open in the end zone for a 45-38 lead. Cornell scored two straight by Devan Clark to retake the lead, but Knox would not go down without a fight. Braeden Westfall picked up a three-yard rushing touchdown, but an illegal touching penalty foiled the Prairie Fire’s extra-point attempt and gave the Rams the victory.

McCaffrey finished with 337 passing yards and four touchdowns on 22-of-43 attempts. He also ran for a team-high 151 yards and a score. Hamilton led Knox with 121 yards receiving. Shutter picked up 49 yards receiving in addition to his two touchdowns. Donnye Sommerville led the defense with 14 tackles, while Quinn Sharp added 11. Jordan Anderson and Mario Whitley each picked up a sack, while Jacob Paul and Quinn Sharp shared in another. Evan Economos and Logan Hollis each forced a fumble.

Knox will travel to Monmouth on November 4.
