Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 24th, 2017

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan volleyball team’s historic season ended with a loss to their West Central Conference rivals, the Macomb Bombers, at the Class 3A Monmouth-Roseville Regional. The night started as well as it could with the Titans winning set one 25-7 in a little over 10 minutes. The Bombers would come back to win the final two sets, 25-21, 25-23. The Titans end the year with the most wins since the consolidation between the towns of Monmouth and Roseville with 27, including an outright West Central Conference North Division title. They were led last night by Kaylee Woodard’s 10 kills and 20 digs. Mackenzie Connell handed out 14 assists and Cora Neal’s 13 service points. The (17-14) Bombers will now move on to play Peoria Notre Dame in tonight’s first semi-final. In the second semi from Monmouth-Roseville High School, Galesburg will battle Peoria Richwoods.

In the Class 2A West Central Regional in Biggsville, Mercer County beat West Hancock 27-25, 25-17 and will go back to take on their Lincoln Trail Conference rivals (27-7) United at 5:30 at West Central High School. That will be the first semi-final of the night, followed by Farmington and the host West Central Heat at 6:30.

In the Class 2A Knoxville Regional quarterfinal, North Fulton defeated Stark County 25-17, 25-12. The Wildcats play Knoxville tonight at 5:30 and Illini West will go up against A-Town at 6:30. All of these matches are at Knoxville High School.

In Class 1A quarterfinals in Sciota at the West Prairie Regionals, Bushnell-Prairie City’s season came to an end with a 25-18, 25-19 loss to Brimfield and Elmwood ended South Fulton’s year with a 25-17, 25-15 victory over the Lady Rebels. West Prairie will play Elmwood and Southeastern will take on Brimfield tonight in the semi-finals.

In the Class 1A Princeville regional, Williamsfield season will continue as the Bombers beat Henry-Senachwine 25-20, 25-13. The Bombers move on to the semi-finals tonight against Princeville.

In the Class 1A at Wethersfield High School in Kewanee, Galva beat ROWVA 25-20, 25-21 and it was Annawan over DePue, 25-15, 25-8.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans split a pair of girls basketball games in Orion against the Chargers. The 7th grade Titans won 21-18 behind Ailexa Hunter and Lexi Finnicum’s five points. Monmouth-Roseville’s 8th grade fell to the Chargers 19-17. Jayda Brown-Dodd led the Titans with 11 points.

The Lombard Zephyrs split a pair of matches in Kewanee against Visitation. The Lombard 7th graders lost 26-23 and were led by Taylor Glas with 8 pts. The Zephyr’s 8th grade would capture the nightcap 32-16 behind Abby Endthoff’s 14 points.

The Churchill Blue Streak 7th and 8th grade girls basketball teams also split with East Peoria at Churchill Junior High School in Galesburg. Churchill lost the 7th grade contest 58-18. Cayman Milroy the Streaks with 12 points. The Blue Streak 8th graders won the second game of the night, 27-22. Abby Lingafelter led Churchill with eight points.

The top-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team is moving on to the Sweet 16 after a 64-54 win over West Virginia in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at
