Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 27th, 2017

Volleyball

IHSA volleyball regional finals took place around the state of Illinois last night. At the West Central High School Class 2A Regional in Biggsville, the United Red Storm came out strong against the Farmington Farmers capturing the first set 25-18. The Farmers would respond by taking set two, 25-23, and then used that momentum to go on and win the 3rd set, and the match, 25-19 to move on to the Farmington Sectonal starting on Monday night. The Red Storm end their season at (28-8) and were led by Carly Thompson with 14 kills. Vada Gregory also had double digit kills with 12. Baylee McKeown handed out 31 assists and Jordian Cook hustled her way to 27 digs. With the win, the Lady Farmers are now (17-13) on the season and will battle (28-6-1) Deer Creek-Mackinaw at 6:30 in the second sectional semi-final on Monday at Farmington High School.

Staying in Class 2A, the Knoxville Blue Bullets came into their regional as the top-seed but the Bullets get upset by Illini West 25-20, 25-20. Knoxville ends their season at (22-12-1). Illini West is not (18-18) and will take on (27-7) Eureka on Monday night in the Farmington Sectional semis at 5:30.

The Orion Chargers defeated Bureau Valley 25-21, 25-23 in the 2A Bureau Valley Regional final. The (31-5) Chargers move on to the Oregon Sectionals and will play host, (28-4-1) Oregon on Monday night. Rockridge fell to Riverdale in a battle of Three Rivers Conference foes, 25-22, 26-24.

In Class 1A, at the Wethersfield Regional in Kewanee, the host Flying Geese had no trouble with Annawan, sweeping both sets 25-12, 25-15. That sets up a classic showdown in the Brimfield Sectional semi-finals as the (35-0) Geese will now go up against the defending state champion West Prairie Cyclones on Monday night at 5:30 at Brimfield High School. The Cyclones also had even less problems with Southeastern, earning a 25-9, 25-18 victory. West Prairie is now (27-10), with many of those 10 losses coming against Class 3A schools. In a loaded Brimfield sectional, (31-6) Hartsburg-Emden will take on the (21-12-1) LaMoille/Ohio coop in the second semi-final.

In Class 4A, the two remaining Western Big Six Conference teams remaining, Moline and Quincy, were knocked out of the postseason. Moline was beaten by Normal (Community) 25-22, 25-23 in the Ottawa Regional final and Quincy lost to (27-5) Edwardsville 25-22, 25-16 in the Quincy Regional.

At the Class 3A Regional at Monmouth-Roseville Regional, it was Peoria Notre Dame over Richwoods, 25-19, 25-22.
