Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 2nd, 2017

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans go (5-0) in the Orion Chargers Classic, beating the hosts 23-22, 21-9 in the championship game. Monmouth-Roseville’s other wins came against Peoria, West Carroll, the Orion junior varsity and Annawan. The United Red Storm went (2-2), finishing in 5th place. Orion’s JV was third and Annawan was fourth. Making the all-tournament team from Monmouth-Roseville was Kaylee Woodard and Carly Gillen. United had Carly Thompson named to the list as well.

Golf

The Monmouth-Roseville boys golf team claimed a championship as well on Saturday in the LaSalle-Peru Cavalier Invitational. As a team, the Titans shot the lowest score of all Class 1A teams taking part. They totaled 340 strokes as a team and were led by Nick Corman’s 77. That tied in him for 9th overall, which was also the lowest 1A score in the tournament. He was joined in the scoring column by Reese Kane in 27th with an 83, Lane Frieden with an 88 and Aaron Blindt with a 92.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls golf team participated in the John Macek Invitational in Champaign on Saturday. Due to injuries and illness, the Streaks once again were not able to field a full team but did have Kirsten Osborn finish in a tie for 7th place individually. Osborn shot a 78. Maitlyn Sanders was also in the top-10 with a score of 80.

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys soccer team improved to (13-3-3) on the season with a 6-3 road win over Peoria on Saturday. Scoring goals for Monmouth-Roseville was Kyaw Thang with a hat-trick, Gilberto Vazquez with two and Grego Massengo with a solo. Erick Suarez assisted on two of those goals, giving him 31 for his career, making him the program’s all-time leader in that stat category.

The Galesburg boys soccer team tied Pekin at Van Dyke Field on Saturday afternoon. Galesburg goalkeeper Hunter Sanders made eight saves for the match.

Cross Country

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys placed 8th out of 17 teams, while the Titan girls were 11th, at the Elmwood Invitational. The Knoxville Blue Bullet boys were 12th. Top area boy finishers included Monmouth-Roseville’s Riley Dulin in 6th, West Central’s Freeman Shoemaker in 24th and Knoxville’s Christian Hensley in 42nd. On the girls side, Monmouth-Roseville’s Arika Hofmann was 21st, Knoxville’s Olivia Hall was 42nd and A-Town’s Natalie Kern was 49th.

The Silver Streak boys and girls cross country teams were in action as well on Saturday, traveling to the Peoria Central Invite at Detweiller Park in East Peoria. The Galesburg boys placed 25th out of 41 teams, while the Silver Streak girls were 17th of 32 schools participating. Individually, Mark Frenster was 111th and Aaron Burrows was 120th out of 280 runners on the boys side. Kaitlyn Pendergast was 20th and Lexi Herr was 23rd of 230 female runners.

Junior High

The ICS Trojan junior high baseball team finished second in the state in Class 1A. They started the weekend on Friday afternoon, beating Royal Prairieview Ogden 9-2 on the strength of a dominant pitching performance by Cormaic Flynn. Flynn goes 6.1 innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs, while striking out eight batters. Ty Corsaro led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. That victory put them in the Final Four on Saturday, where ICS bested Ottawa Marquette 4-3 in an instant-classic in extra innings. The Trojans get a run in the top of the 8th as CJ Johnson led the inning off with a double and would eventually score on a passed ball with one out. Aidan Parkins gets the final three outs in the bottom of the inning, sending ICS to championship game against powerful Joliet St. Paul. Joliet scored 11 runs in the top of the 4th inning to end the contest early, getting a 15-0 win over the Trojans. ICS ends their memorable season with a record of (14-7). Joliet finishes with a record of (19-1).

The Galesburg junior high cross country team headed to Delavan for the DARE Classic Invitational. Briana Admire led the girls, finishing the 2-mile course in 37th place. Galesburg placed 13th of 19 schools in the varsity girls division. Luca Gomez finished just two places out of the medals, pacing the Galesburg boys with a 27th-place effort.

The Lombard 8th grade girls basketball team played a pair of games in the Galva Shootout on Saturday. The Zephyrs beat Monmouth-Roseville 31-13, led by Mariella Snell and Monet McCants seven points each. It was Abby Endthoff leading the way for Lombard with 10 points in their 27-22 loss to Sherrard in their second contest.

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan 8th grade girls basketball team played a pair of games in the Galva shootout on Saturday. The dropped a 31-13 contest against Lombard in their first game. Cristina Dilley and Kya Patterson led the Lady Titans with 3 points each. Monmouth-Roseville also lost to Galva 32-27. Carlee Wooddell led the Titans with 10 points.
