Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Oct. 6th, 2017

Soccer

The Monmouth-Roseville boys soccer team put on an offensive display in their final regular season game, scoring 10 straight goals during the contest to post a 10-3 victory over Pekin on Senior Night at Eugene Tinker Field. After the visiting Dragons scored the first goal of the match, the Titans scored the final five goals of the first half and the first five goals of the second half to improve to 15-3-3 on the season. Seniors Erick Suarez, Kyaw Thang and Gilberto Vazquez all scored two goals apiece for the Titans, and classmates Eric Sikorski, Grego Massengo and Genaro Arteaga also notched goals on a night when 11 seniors started for M-R. The Titans’ other goal came from junior Robert Lian. The Titans will open regional play next Tuesday at Rock Island Alleman.

Volleyball

The Monmouth-Roseville varsity volleyball team defeated Southeastern in three sets in Augusta to move to (21-7) on the season. Carly Gillen led Monmouth-Roseville with 12 kills and nine digs. Delaney Woodard handed out 21 assists and served for 13 points, including six aces. The Titans will host Macomb next Tuesday on senior night at Monmouth-Roseville High School.

The Galesburg Silver Streak volleyball team got a 25-20, 25-21 Western Big Six Conference win over Rock Island at John Thiel Gymnasium in Galesburg. Emily Meinert hammered seven kills to lead the Streaks. Megan Lingafelter dished out 13 assists and Lauren Campbell hustled her way to five digs. The Silver Streaks are now (12-9) overall and (4-3) in the Big Six.

The Bushnell-Prairie City Spartans lost to Lewistown 25-21, 25-9 in Prairieland Conference action. Madison Allen and Haley Hood each had two kills for the Spartans. Savanah Serven served for ten points and had four assists.

Cross Country

The Dunes in Kewanee, Illinois was the place for the Lincoln Trail Conference Cross Country championships. Mid County is the boys team champ with West Central’s Freemie Shoemaker the individual champ. United’s Yovanni Larios-Saavedra made the all-conference team with a 9th place finish. Annawan-Wethersfield is the girls team titleist. United’s Olivia Bishop was the top Red Storm runner, crossing the finish line in 27th place. Her teammates Daniele Bowling was 31st and Carolina Cruz was 34th.

Junior High

Monmouth-Roseville hosted the United Red Storm at the junior high in Roseville in girls basketball. The teams split a pair of games on the night, with Monmouth-Roseville winning the 7th grade game, 23-7, and the Red Storm taking the 8th grade contest 37-33. Leading scorers for Monmouth-Roseville’s 7th graders was Lexi Finnicum with nine points. The top scorer for the Titan 8th grade was Jayda Brown-Dodd with 12 points. Laney Butler had ten points for United’s 8th grade team and Luci Kane chipped in with nine.

The Churchill Junior High girls basketball teams were swept on the road by Sherrard. Churchill lost the seventh grade game 27-21. Lilly Clark led Churchill with eight points. The Blue Streaks are now (6-3) on the season. The 8th grade Blue Streaks dropped a 26-13 decision to the Tigers. Abby Lingafelter led Churchill with four points.

The Galesburg eighth grade football team defeating Moline John Deere 22-8. Alex Egipciaco led the Streaks with a pair of touchdowns. Dre Egipciaco also caught a pass for Galesburg, who are now (6-0-1) on the season.
