Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Nov. 14th, 2017

Girls Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans are in Woodhull this week for Ridgewood Thanksgiving Tourney. Pool play will be played throughout the week with championship crossover play on Saturday. The Titans start their season with a matchup with their recent postseason rivals, the Knoxville Blue Bullets. The young Titans got off to a rough start, trailing 7-0 at the outset and 17-5 at the end of the first quarter and 26-14 at the half. Monmouth-Roseville would battle back to outscore the Blue Bullets 24-21 in the second half but couldn’t overcome their early deficit to fall 47-38. Leading the scoring for Monmouth-Roseville was sophomore Carly Gillen with 12 points and senior Cora Neal had ten. For Knoxville, sophomore Breena Shreeves and junior Lauren Kavanaugh each totaled 12 points.

Also in Woodhull last night, it was Orion over Galva 48-42, BPC defeated the host Spartans 45-33 and Riverdale beat Elmwood 64-49.

In the 32nd Annual ROWVA High School Lady Cranberry Classic in Oneida, Mercer County jumped on West Central early and defeated the Heat 60-27 in the first game of the 4-team round-robin tournament. Carly Lafary and Corinne Booton led West Central in scoring with five points each. ROWVA beat A-Town 42-39 in the nightcap.

The Macomb Bombers dropped their season and hometown tournament opener to Pekin 63-39.

In a non-tournament matchup, Camp Point Central/Southeastern defeated Brown County 57-46 behind 37 points from Laney Lantz. Princeville beat Brimfield 41-32. Lucy Waid led Princeville with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Junior High

The Lombard Zephyr 7th grade lost to Rock Island Edison 39-36. Joe Moren led Lombard with 21 points. The Lombard 8th graders salvaged a split on the night with a 42-27 win over Edison. Dre Egipciaco led the Zephyrs with 15 points and Grant Aten chipped in with 13.

The United Red Storm 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams traveled to Stronghurst for a pair of games against West Central. The Red Storm 7th graders lost 45-29. Leading United’s offense was Abel Wilson with 15 points. The Red Storm 7th grade is now (3-3) on the season. The 8th grade Red Storm boys won the nightcap, 29-27 behind 17 points from Nolan Leffler. United’s 8th grade is now (2-4) overall on the year.
