Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Nov. 15th, 2017

Girls Basketball

In the Ridgewood Tourney in Woodhull, the Monmouth-Roseville Titans bounced back from an opening night loss to Knoxville on Monday with a 51-37 victory over Galva. The Titans only gave up nine total points in the second and third quarters to get their first win of the season. Sophomore post player, Carly Gillen led all scorers with 18 points, with half of those coming in the opening period. Cora Neal and Camryn Jones chipped in with nine points each. Patty Brynn led Galva with 13 points. In the second game of the night, United opened up their tournament and season with a 47-29 loss to Orion. Carly Thompson led United with 13 points. Kaylee Cornell added five points for the Red Storm. Also in Woodhull, it was Riverdale over BPC 45-41 and Rockridge over the host Ridgewood Spartans in a tight one 42-41. Madison Allen led BPC with 17 points. Tonight, Monmouth-Roseville and United battle at 6:00 in the Middle School gym, with Knoxville taking on Galva afterwards at 7:30. In the high school gym, it’s Riverdale and Rockridge first, followed by BPC and Elmwood.

At the 32nd Annual Lady Cranberry Classic in Oneida at ROWVA High School, Mercer County and the host Tigers got wins last night to put themselves in the championship game tonight at 7:45. Mercer County defeated A-Town 50-46 and ROWVA beat West Central 36-30. In the first game of the evening, Mer Co and A-Town were tied at 19 at the half but the Golden Eagles would finally pull away in the 4th quarter to go to (2-0) for the week so far. Payton Florine led A-Town with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Dani Hagens led Mercer County with 18 points and 11 rebounds. In the nightcap, ROWVA also broke open a close game in the second half with 14, 4th quarter points to get the six point win over the Heat. Mady Reed led West Central with nine points, followed by Brooke Peterson with eight. ROWVA’s Stormy Johnson led all scorers with ten. Tonight, along with the championship game between ROWVA and Mercer County, it’s West Central and A-Town at 6:00.

The Galesburg Silver Streak ladies got their season underway with a 71-34 win over East Peoria in the Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament at John Thiel Gym in Galesburg. The Streaks got out to a 20-4 lead after one quarter and led 41-10 at the half. The Streak’s balanced scoring was led by double-digit scorers, Emily Meinert’s 13 points and Yvonne Mixon’s ten points. Lauryn Campbell and Kelsi Legge each chipped in with nine points each. The sophomore Lady Streaks got a 49-14 win over East Peoria in the first game of the night. Riley Jenkins and Bri Jefferson led Galesburg with nine points each. The Silver Streaks scored 32 points total in the second and third quarters.

At the Fulton County Thanksgiving Tournament, it was Canton over South Fulton 61-29 and Farmington over North Fulton 60-29.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan 7th grade girls basketball team dropped a 23-22 game to Knoxville in the semi-finals of the Prairieland Conference Tournament. Chevelle Wolf led Monmouth-Roseville in scoring with eight points. Lexi Finnicum chipped in with seven points. Up next, the Titan’s enter regional play game on Saturday morning at 11:30 against Mercer County in Joy.

The United Red Storm boys basketball team split a pair of games at home against LaHarpe. The Red Storm 7th grade fell 33-20. Abel Wilson led United with eight points. The Red Storm 8th grade salvaged the split with a 27-19 win over the Eagles. Nolan Leffler led the way for United with 15 points. The Red Storm 7th grade is now (3-4) overall, with the 8th grade improving to (3-4).
