Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Nov. 29th, 2017

Boys Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys basketball team took on the undefeated Mercer County Golden last night Monmouth-Roseville High School. The Titans were (3-1) in the Orion Tip-Off Classic last week, losing to eventual tourney champ, Alleman. The Golden Eagles were (4-0) and lost a tournament tiebreaker to Alleman to finish runnerup. Monmouth-Roseville standout forward, Jordan Cheek sustained an ankle injury and did not play in the final game of the tournament and was unavailable last night as well. The Titans jumped out to a 22-12 first quarter lead and were never challenged from there, getting a 68-52 win over the Golden Eagles. Leading Monmouth-Roseville in scoring was Nick Kelley with 20 points. Lane Frieden and Austin Hammond contributed 12 points each as well for the Titans.

The Knoxville Blue Bullet boys basketball team fell to Havana 44-31 in Prairieland Conference action in Knoxville. Leading the Blue Bullets in scoring was Cade Shonkwiler with 11 points.

In other Prairieland play, it was Elmwood over West Prairie 58-25 and Brimfield beat Peoria Heights 66-41.

In non-conference action, BPC defeated Sherrard 56-47.

Wrestling

Coming off an Illini Bluffs Tournament championship on Saturday, the Galesburg Silver Streak wrestling team traveled the short distance to Monmouth’s Central Intermediate Gym for a dual match against the Monmouth-Roseville Titans, who were competing for the first time this season. The title at Illlini Bluffs was the first team tournament championship for Galesburg since 2013. The Streaks fell behind 18-0 at the outset but would comeback to get a 46-37 victory. Getting wins for Galesburg was Rodrick Ngandu, Nick Perry, Jacob Yeast, Cayden Taflinger, Robert Castellano and Cody Thomas. All of those victories came at 160 pounds and above. Getting wins for M-R were junior Cory Stokes with a pin, senior Kody Attwell, freshman Ashton Anderson and sophomore Martin Arteaga.

Junior High

The Monmouth Roseville 8th grade Lady Titans basketball team began their postseason with a game against the A-Town tornadoes. The Titans fall 47-24 to end their season. Leading scorers for the Titans were Carlee Wooddell with 10 pts and Jayda Brown-Dodd and Kamrynn Bearden with 6pts each.

The ICS 8th grade girls beat Galva 41-31 to advance to the Regional championship on Thursday at ICS. Mattie Gillen was leading scorer with 17, Belle Thompson added 10. Raina Shappard had 14 points for Galva. ICS will now play Cuba on Thursday at 6:00 at ICS.

The Lombard Zephyr boys basketball 7th grade team defeated Rowva 39-31. Leading the Zephyrs in scoring was Joseph Moren with 20 points and Jacob Coon with 11. The Lombard 8th grade completed a sweep on the night with a 64-18 win over the Tigers. The Zephyrs were led by Daylan Ellington’s 17 points and Dre Egipciaco’s 16 points.
