Sandburg Volleyball Sweeps Triton in Region IV Quarterfinals

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team was nearly flawless in its postseason opener, sweeping Triton 25-6, 25-11 and 25-9 on Wednesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in the quarterfinals of the Region IV District A tournament.

The Chargers (23-14) served up a season-high 14 aces, including a season-best seven from sophomore setter Camerin Huizenga (Fulton, Ill./Fulton). Sandburg’s only deficit came on the first point of the match against the sixth-seeded Trojans (5-18).

The third-seeded Chargers advance to face No. 2 seed Moraine Valley, which swept Black Hawk in its quarterfinal match, in the semifinals at noon Saturday on the campus of the College of Lake County. The championship match is slated for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, also at Lake County.

Hannah Thompson (Blandinsville, Ill./West Prairie) had a team-best eight kills to lead the Sandburg attack. Josalyn Owens (Lincoln, Ill./Lincoln) added seven kills, and Lexi Strange (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) put down six.

Emma Derry delivered 21 assists and added four aces for Sandburg, while Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden) had 13 digs. Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) totaled three blocks for the Chargers, who finished their home schedule with an 8-1 record.
