Scots Ready for Championship Matchup with St. Norbert

The Monmouth College Fighting Scots and St. Norbert Green Knights are set to clash this weekend in the Midwest Conference Championship game. Both teams have rattled off seven straight victories, with Monmouth owning an 8-1 record, and St. Norbert sitting at 7-2. MC Head Coach Chad Braun praised Norbert’s defense ahead of this matchup.

“Much, much improved from a year ago. They’re really good up front defensively. Their front seven, eight guys are really stout against the run. I think they’re only giving up like 50 yards a game rushing. They’re really, really good against the run. On the back end, they’re pretty good too, so it’s going to be a great challenge for our offense this week,” he said.

The Scots have the luxury of playing this decisive game at April Zorn Memorial Stadium, where the Scots have dropped just one game in the last four years. Their last home loss came in Sept. 2015 at the hands of Central College, 23-17. Braun recognizes the advantages of playing at home, including avoiding the 5 1/2 hour trip between De Pere, Wisconsin and Monmouth.

“There’s all kinds of advantages. Just that trip, it can kind of wear on you. It’s a quick turnaround. Your preparation is cut short on your week. We get to stay at home and practice on Friday. And then obviously, our community here in Monmouth getting behind us and having the crowd factor advantage. That’s huge for us,” Braun stated.

A win this Saturday would mean back-to-back Midwest Conference titles for the Scots for the first time since 2008-09. Kickoff for this pivotal championship matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m.
