Something's Gotta Give: Monmouth Defense vs. Trine Offense

Share

Monmouth College will have their hands full this weekend in a battle against Trine University in Round 1 of the DIII football playoffs. The Thunder own a 10-0 record at this point in the year, scoring 40 or more points in eight of those victories. However, the Scots and head coach Chad Braun know what they’re up against. The defensive-minded Scots have given up just 47 points total over their last eight games.

“Their tailback is really, really special. Their quarterback does a great job of decision-making. He’s a great athlete. Up front, they’re very, very good – very well-coached. They’re going to run a bazillion formations. They’re a little bit funky with what they run. It’s just not traditionally what you see week in, week out. We’re going to have to be ready to go,” Braun said.

The Scots were able to get the St. Norbert monkey off their back last weekend, collecting a thrilling 9-6 win at April Zorn Memorial Stadium to clinch back-to-back Midwest Conference championship titles. Braun is happy with the identity of toughness and determination this team has built over the course of this season.

“That’s just the type of kids we got. We’re thankful that we have the group of guys that we’ve got. To play as hard as they play week in and week out, I’m just really proud of our kids,” he said.

The Scots will look to make good on their first-round playoff exit last year at the hands of Coe College. Kickoff from Angola, Indiana is set for 11 a.m. CT, with pregame coverage starting at 10:40 on WRAM.
