Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Dec. 19th, 2017

Boys Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan boys basketball team played a rare Monday night game at home last night against the Ridgewood Spartans in a non-conference matchup. Also rare was the 3-game losing streak that the Titans carried into the game. A 27-points first quarter all but put that streak to rest as the Titans use their big start to get a 78-63 win and move to (5-4) on the season. Monmouth-Roseville’s Jordan Cheek saw his first game action since suffering a high-ankle sprain way back in game three of the season. He and his teammate Nick Kelley combined for 20 points in the opening period that ended with the Titans holding a 27-9 lead. Ridgewood would cut the deficit to 10 points several times but the Titans would respond with each run with a run of their own and get the lead back to 16-18 points each time. Kelley led all scorers with 26 points, while Cheek ended with 19. Austin Hammond was also in double figures with 11. The Spartans fall to (5-4) on the season and were led by Brian Greenman’s 19 and Travis Kane and Riley Nelson each had 10 points as well for Ridgewood, who get right back on the floor tonight with a game against Orion at home. Monmouth-Roseville will host Camp Point Central in a West Central Conference game at home on Friday. The Titan JV also got a win over the Spartans, 49-32.

Girls Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team hit the road to Orion for a non-conference game at Orion High School. The Titans jumped out to a 16-11 lead after one quarter and 34-28 at the half on their way to a 73-59 win over the Chargers. Monmouth-Roseville had three girls in double figures, led by Carly Gillen’s 20 points. Cora Neal added 18 and Camryn Jones had 10. The Titans are now (9-5) on the season and will take a trip to Camp Point Central/Southeastern on Thursday night. That game will be played in Augusta. The Titan JV team got a 53-46 win in the evening’s first game.

In other girls basketball last night, it was BPC over the West Central Heat 39-31. The loss stopped a 2-game winning streak for the Heat. Corinne Booton led West Central with 11 points.

In Prairieland Conference play, it was Havana over Farmington 43-29 and South Fulton over North Fulton 51-41.

Wrestling

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan varsity wrestling team swept a quadrangular meet on the road the last night. The Titans defeated Quincy Notre Dame 48-31, Camp Point Central 39-38 and Peoria Manual 38-45. Getting multiple wins on the night for Monmouth-Roseville was Cory Stokes (3),Kody Atwell (2), Martin Arteaga (2), Genaro Arteaga (2), Jared Bolon (2), Ashton Anderson (2) and Dante Taylor (2).

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High basketball teams swept Sherrard Monday night in Prairieland Conference play. The 7th grade Titans improved to 11-3 (7-1) with a 36-24 win. Titan scorers: Silas Braun 14. The 8th grade Titans moved to 9-5 (5-3) with a 30-22 victory. Titan scorers: Ben Anderson 16
In the biggest win in program history, the Western Illinois women’s basketball team was able to knock off the No. 18 nationally-ranked Stanford Cardinal 71-64 Monday night (Dec. 19) inside Maples Arena in California. After trailing by as many as 11 in the game, Western Illinois was able to rally off a second-half surge, and outscored the Cardinal 47-31 over the final two quarters for the monumental victory. Emily Clemens led the way for Western with 26 points, five steals and four assists, followed by Taylor Higginbotham’s double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lombard Zephyr 8th grade boys basketball team ended their season last night with a game in Macomb. The Zephyrs get a 51-31 win over the Bombers to finish with a perfect (19-0) record. Daylan Ellington led the Zephyrs with 22 points. Malik Wilder chipped in with 8. Congratulations to the Zephyrs on a fantastic season.
