Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Dec. 1st, 2017

Girls Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team was on a 5-game winning streak heading into last night’s West Central Conference North Division showdown with Illini West at the Shoebox at Monmouth-Roseville High School. But the Titans hadn’t played since beating West Hancock on November 21st. The rust showed early on as Illini West jumped out to an early lead but Monmouth-Roseville would recover to take an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Titans scored the first bucket of the second quarter to lead 13-10 but it was all downhill from therea as they would only score seven points the rest of the ballgame, falling in a defensive battle, 37-20. Carly Gillen was the leading scorer for Monmouth-Roseville with seven points. Baylee Clampitt led the Chargers with 19 points. Monmouth-Roseville is now (5-2) on the season, while Illini West improves to (6-1). Illini West won the JV game 51-49 in double overtime. Riley Huston led Mon-Rose with 13 points and Lily Cundiff was also in double figures for the Titans with 12.

Also in West Central Conference North Division action, it was Macomb losing to Camp Point Central/Southeastern in a high-scoring affair, 87-61.

The Galesburg Silver Streaks got back in the win column with a 62-41 win over United Township in Western Big Six Conference play at John Thiel Gym in Galesburg last night. The Streaks, at (4-3) now on the season and (1-1) in the Big Six. Emily Meinert led Galesburg with 18 points. Also in double figures for the Silver Streaks were Andrea Sampson with 14 points and Yvonne Mixon chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Streaks also won the JV game 56-47 behind 17 points from Riley Jenkins and 16 from Tiara Pendleton.
There was one high school boys basketball game last night, the United Red Storm won their 3rd game of the season with a 43-34 win over Southeastern at the Fieldhouse at United High School. Ethan Chenault led a balanced Red Storm scoring attack with 11 points. Brannock McVey scored 10. The Red Storm JV also beat the Suns in the first game of the night, 34-28.

The Knoxville Blue Bullet girls remained undefeated on the season at (8-0) with a 46-36 win over South Fulton in a Prairieland Conference matchup in Knoxville. Lauren Kavanaugh led the Bullets with 16 points.

Also in Prairieland play, Brimfield beat BPC 44-31. Madison Allen scored 12 points and SaVannah Serven added 11 to lead the Spartans in the loss.

The West Central Heat fell to Mendon Unity 71-52 in a non-conference game in Biggsville. Corinne Booton led the Heat with 20 points.

The ROWVA Lady Tigers lost to Elmwood 64-52. Kaylnn Garza led ROWVA with 15 points.

Also in non-conference play, Ridgewood was on the losing end of a 48-27 decision to Farmington. Carlie Barman led Ridgewood in scoring with nine points.

Boys Basketball

There was one high school boys basketball game last night, the United Red Storm won their 3rd game of the season with a 43-34 win over Southeastern at the Fieldhouse at United High School. Ethan Chenault led a balanced Red Storm scoring attack with 11 points. Brannock McVey scored 10. The Red Storm JV also beat the Suns in the first game of the night, 34-28.

Wrestling

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan wrestlers split a pair of matches with Alleman and Rockridge. The Titans lost to Alleman 66-10 but came back to beat Rockridge 48-36.

Bowling

The West Central Heat girls bowling team traveled to Galesburg to bowl against the Silver Streak girls in a dual match at Northgate Lanes. The Heat fall to the Streaks in a narrow decision, 2284-2267. Leading West Central was Danielle Rhinehart with a 512 series. She had a single-high game of 200. Caitie Martinez followed up with a 509, 3-game series with a high game of 186. Leading the Galesburg Silver Streaks was Alyssa Theobald with a 529 and a match-high single game of 202. Mary Sweesy was second on the team with a 472 series.

Junior High

In junior high postseason girls basketball, the ICS Trojan 8th grade girls season came to a close after a loss in the Regional Championship to Cuba 24-15. Mattie Gillen had 7 points & Belle Thompson had 6 to lead the Trojans. ICS’ final record was 18-4.

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High boys basketball teams faced Churchill Thursday night in Galesburg. The 7th grade Titans fell 41-18 and were led by Max Cole with 9 ponts. Churchill was led by Roman Wilson’s 14 points. The 8th grade Titans fell 43-21. Leading Monmouth-Roseville in scoring was Connor Thompson with 6 points. Churchill was led by Kannon Kleine’s 13 points and Jeremiah Babers 10.
