Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Dec. 22nd, 2017
Girls Basketball
The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball team trailed 33-25 heading to the 4th quarter in their West Central Conference North Division road game against the Camp Point Central/Southeastern co-op. The Titans would eventually gut-out a 54-48 win over the Panthers by going 16-21 from the free throw line in the final eight minutes of the ballgame. Senior Cora Neal and sophomore Carly Gillen would combine to go 15-for-16 during that time. Neal would tie the Panther’s Kennady Marlow for game-high scoring honors with 14 points. Gillen added 12 points and also in double figures from Monmouth-Roseville was Camryn Jones with 11 and Kelci Shelton with 10. The Titans improve to (10-5) overall and more importantly go to (2-1) in the WCC North Division. CPC/SE, which placed 4th in the Class 2A state finals last year, drops to (7-4) and (2-3). Monmouth-Roseville was victorious in the junior varsity game as well, getting a 53-36 win over the Panthers. Riley Huston led the Titans with 14 points and Lily Cundiff added 12, nine of those coming from behind the 3-point arc.
The Galesburg Silver Streak girls hosted Peoria Notre Dame at John Thiel Gym in non-conference affair. The Streaks jumped out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, winning by a final score of 47-29. Emily Meinert led Galesburg with 11 points and Yvonne Mixon added 10 points. With the win, the Streaks get back to .500 on the season at (6-6). In the first game of the night, Riley Jenkins poured in 20 points and Tiara Pendleton added 16 as the Silver Streak sophomores get a 63-53 win over the Irish.
Also in girls basketball last night, it was ROWVA over Midland 43-34 in another non-conference matchup in Oneida. The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Abby Stowe with 14 points. Calyn Garza added 13. ROWVA is now (4-12) on the season. The Tigers had two wins all of last season.
Elsewhere, it was Illini West over South Fulton, 49-26. Baylee Clampitt led IW with 19 points.
In Prairieland Conference action, Havana was all over the Peoria Heights/Quest co-op, 59-15.
In Western Big Six Conference play Moline defeated Alleman 50-29. Allanah Crompton led Moline, now (9-5) overall and still on top of the league standings at (4-1), with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Annalise Connoly led Alleman with nine points, all on 3-point shots.
