Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for December 18th, 2017

Girls Basketball

The Abingdon/Knoxville Girls Basketball Holiday Tournament came to an end on Saturday at Knoxville High School. Brimfield claimed the tourney championship with a 53-39 win over Illini Bluffs. Freshman guard Haley Wallace had 14 points, junior guard Mallory Meinke 13 and junior forward Kamryn Cuevas 10 for Brimfield. It was Farmington over Knoxville 47-36 in the 3rd place game and Elmwood tripped up the A-Town Lady Tornadoes for 5th place. In a game you could hear on AM 1330/FM 94.1 WRAM on Saturday morning, the West Central Heat beat United 38-23 for 7th place. The Heat only led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter but would hold the Red Storm to single-digit scoring in the final three periods to get the 15-point win. United’s Kierstyn Johnson led all scorers with 11 points. Jessica Smith and Grace Meyer each scored eight points to lead the Heat. In the first game of the day, it was ROWVA over the Farmington JV squad 45-29.

Also in girls basketball on Saturday, Bureau Valley beat Galva 44-34, Wethersfield lost to Putnam County 46-36 and Camp Point Central/Southeastern dropped a 45-32 game to St. Thomas More of Champaign.

Boys Basketball

It was time for the 17 annual Iowa/Illinois Shootout at Augustana College. The Iowa schools would win 5 of 7 games on the day for the overall win, their second in a row. One of those two wins was the Galesburg Silver Streaks over the Bettendorf Bulldogs 67-31. The Streaks are now (8-2) on the season. Galesburg made 11, 3-pointers in the game, led by Cornell Dotson’s 7 shots from beyond the arc. He would lead all scorers with 20 points. Khalil Hodge was also in double figures with 12 points.

Elsewhere, it was Annawan remaining undefeated at (9-0) with a 70-46 win over Newark. Farmington beat Illini Bluffs 75-61 and Camp Point Central beat Liberty 36-33.

Wrestling

The Galesburg Silver Streak wrestling team traveled to Metamora on Saturday for the Metamora Holiday tournament. The Streaks placed 13th out of 16 schools. Robert Castellano led the Streaks with a 3rd place individual finish at 220 pounds. A pair of Galesburg grapplers got 5th places, Harley Kent at 126 pounds and Cody Thomas at 285 pounds.

Swimming and Diving

The Galesburg High School boys swimming and diving team finished seventh at the Peoria Richwoods Midwest Invitational on Saturday. Carl Sandburg High School won the 10 team invite with University High placing second. Jakob Pettit led the Silver Streaks with a second-place in the 50 freestyle. Austyn White was third in 1-meter diving competition and Drew Giles was fourth in the 100 breaststroke. The Galesburg 200 medley relay team of Giles, Pettit, Zach Cantwell and Tommy Williams touched the wall in fourth place.

Junior High

In youth girls basketball over the weekend, the Monmouth-Roseville 6th grade Shooting Stars swept a pair of games against Knoxville and A-Town on Saturday at Hawthorne Gymnasium in Galesburg. Eight Stars scored in a 26-5 win over Knoxville. Meyah Hunter led the way with 6 points. It was more of the same in Game 2, as nine Stars broke into the scoring column in a 34-8 win over A-Town. Natalie Boyd scored 10 to lead the way while Hunter had 8.
