Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for December 21st, 2017

Wrestling

Coming off three wins in a quadrangular meet on Monday over Camp Point Central, Peoria Manual and Quincy Notre Dame, the Monmouth-Roseville High School wrestling team continued their winning streak last night with a pair of victories over Midwest Central and Peoria Heights. The Titans defeated Midwest Central 48-22 and put a thumping on Heights 72-3. Getting two wins last night for Monmouth-Roseville was Ashton Anderson at 106 pounds, Martin Arteaga at 120 pounds, Genarro Arteaga at 132, Rodrigo Raygoza at 170 pounds, Carlos Arteaga at 182, Jesus Rojas at 220 and Josh Cerna at 285. Monmouth-Roseville is off until taking part in the Rumble in the Land of Lincoln hosted by PORTA High School at the Bank of Springfield Center in Springfield. The Rumble is a 2-day 45 team tournament on the 27th and 28th.

Girls Basketball

The United Red Storm girls basketball team traveled to John Wood Community College for the annual Rumble on the River, a week-long shootout in Quincy. Despite leading 7-5 at the end of the first quarter, the Storm would fall 38-25. An 11-2 scoring deficit in the second quarter led to United’s undoing. Shaylyn Lucas led United with eight points. The Storm are now idle until after school resumes in early January.

Elsewhere in high school girls basketball last night, there was an important showdown in the Prairieland Conference as Lewistown and Havana met in a makeup from December 7th. Lewistown moves to (4-0) in the conference and (11-1) overall with a 68-52 win. Havana drops to (2-1) in the Prairieland and (8-5) overall.

It was Fulton over Orion 38-34.

Boys Basketball

The A-Town Tornadoes beat Stark County 39-28 in a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday night. The Tornadoes get their 6th win against just two losses, despite going 12-26 from the free throw line. Hunter Darst led A-Town with 12 points.

Also, Galva beat LaMoille 62-51.
