Progression is Evident for United Basketball Programs

Basketball season is in full swing for both the girls and boys basketball teams at United High School. The Red Storm girls currently sit at 0-9 overall, but head coach Lisa Gartellos is encouraged by some of the progress she has seen from her youthful ball club.

“It’s a lot easier to see them learn and get better at a younger age. They are working their tails off. They’re excited, and they have good energy and a good attitude. I’m really happy with what they’re doing right now,” Gartellos said.

Gartellos and her team will start their holiday tournament action this week at the Abingdon-Avon/Knoxville Tournament.

On the guy’s side, United has put together an impressive start to the season, posting a 4-5 record to start 2017-18 – already surpassing their win total from last season. Head coach Doug Dennison is pleased with the direction his program is headed in, but doesn’t want his players to be satisfied with the early-season success.

“It’s nice to get a few wins because that just kind of backs up everything that Coach Dennison and Coach Milroy tell the kids. It actually means something with a couple of wins,” he said.

The boys will look to continue their hot start to the season this week at their very own holiday tournament. United split two games over the weekend with a loss to Peoria Quest and a win over West Prairie. They’ll face off with Riverdale tonight at 7:30.
