GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team was red-hot from inside the arc, beyond it and at the free-throw line during a 96-73 blowout of Arrowhead Conference rival Black Hawk on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (14-7, 3-0) shot 61 percent (34 of 56) from the floor — including 10 of 19 from 3-point range — and were 18 of 18 from the line to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Four Sandburg players scored in double figures, led by sophomore Matt Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens), who had 22 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Sophomore point guard Kourtlandt Martin (Evansville, Ind./Central) sank all 10 of his foul shots, scored 15 points and handed out a game-best eight assists. Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) and Tyler Houston (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville) each added 14 points for Sandburg.

Robinson also led all players with eight rebounds, and Houston, a transfer from Black Hawk, went 4 of 7 from long range and had five assists against his former team. All 11 Chargers saw action, with 10 of them recording at least one field goal.

Sandburg shot 57 percent from the field in building a 51-38 halftime lead, then opened the second half on an 11-3 spurt to open up a 21-point advantage. The Chargers’ biggest lead of the night was 25 points, at 96-71.

“It was just one of those nights where we executed well everywhere on offense,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We were aggressive with the ball and shared it well to create open shots for other guys.”

Conner Fuller paced the Braves (6-14, 1-3) with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Blake Maris hit five 3s and finished with 17 points for Black Hawk.

Sandburg will put its unbeaten conference mark on the line at 7 p.m. Thursday at Highland, which entered its game Tuesday at Sauk Valley with a 2-0 record against Arrowhead opponents.

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team grabbed the lead late in the third quarter and used a big run in the fourth to pull away from Black Hawk for a 61-49 Arrowhead Conference victory on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

Sandburg (8-10, 2-1) had trouble scoring for most of the first 30 minutes before coming alive late in the third. Trailing 35-32 late in the third, sophomore guard Alivia Cummings (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) ignited a 7-0 run to close the period and give the Chargers the lead for good. Freshman Danayzia Stuckey (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) added two free throws and knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Chargers a 39-35 advantage.

Stuckey made it seven straight points of her own with a pair of free throws that opened the fourth as she finished the night with 10 points, one of four Chargers in double figures.

Sandburg led 43-41 with 6:54 left before scoring 13 straight over the next 2:25 to go up by 15. Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) sparked the run with a driving layup and added a steal that led to a three-point play during the stretch.

“We were finally able to find some offense late in the second half, and we did a good job of creating scoring from our defense,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “For a while, we didn’t shoot very well from anywhere except the line, but those two stretches late in the game were the difference for us.”

Madison Lowe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) had a game-high 16 points to lead the Chargers. Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) finished a rebound shy of a double-double, posting 12 points and a team-leading nine rebounds. Cummings added 11 points for Sandburg, highlighted by a 5-for-6 night from the line.

Lynsey Gradert scored 11 to lead the Braves (6-11, 2-2).

Sandburg heads up to face Highland in another Arrowhead contest at 5 p.m. Thursday.
