Knox College basketball teams split at home in MWC; Women get important win

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire women’s basketball team earned a huge home victory over Lake Forest for basketball homecoming.

Knox (10-5, 5-2) jumped out to a six point lead in the first quarter and added to their lead early in the second quarter. The Prairie Fire scored the first seven points of the second stanza, but the Foresters held steady the rest of the half and trailed 34-25 at halftime. Knox struck first in the second half, but Lake Forest used a 16-4 run to bring the score to an even 41-41 midway through the third quarter. The Prairie Fire stormed back and held a 53-47 lead by the end of the period. Knox expanded their lead to 11 early in the fourth quarter, but the Foresters would not go down easy. Lake Forest brought their deficit back to eight, but the Prairie Fire shot 13-of-13 from the charity stripe down the stretch to earn the 79-60 win.

Jarrelyn McCall led the Prairie Fire with 22 points and 11 rebounds to earn a double-double. Karlie Thorn scored 18 points and Morgan Potter added 14. Potter also grabbed seven boards. Hailey Leinart rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points of her own. Kyra Huffman poured in eight points and grabbed six rebounds.

Knox will look to continue their excellent start to conference play when they travel to Illinois College on January 17.

Blake Godbold, Knox College Men’s Basketball

GALESBURG, Illinois—The Prairie Fire men’s basketball team outscored Lake Forest in the second half, but a slow start in the first half spelled their defeat.

Knox (3-12, 1-7 MWC) fell behind 23-0 in the first half and by halftime trailed the Foresters 50-20. The Prairie Fire could not gain much ground in the second half and ultimately lost 80-51.

Blake Godbold led the Prairie Fire offense with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. He added five boards as well. Jeremiah Horton poured in eight points off the bench on a 3-for-3 performance from the field.

Knox will look to rebound as they travel to Illinois College on January 17.
