Knox College Prairie Fire Basketball Teams Lose Two MWC Games in Iowa

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Prairie Fire women’s basketball team faced off against one of the top defenses in the conference, scoring just 44 in the loss to Cornell.

Knox (8-5, 3-2 MWC) will move into fourth place in the conference after the loss. The Prairie Fire jumped out to a 9-6 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Rams used a 10-point run to finish the stanza up 20-13. Cornell expanded their lead to 32-22 by halftime, but Knox pulled to within three late in the third quarter. The Rams began pulling away again in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 61-44 victory.

Kyra Huffman racked up 17 points and nine rebound, narrowly missing the double-double. Hailey Leinart added 12 points while Jarrelyn McCall finished with seven points, six rebounds, and four assists.

The Prairie Fire will return home to host Beloit on January 12.

Deryk Ruple, Knox College Men’s Basketball

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Prairie Fire men’s basketball team was able to go point for point with Cornell in the second half of this Midwest Conference matchup. However, it was not enough to gain back the ground they had lost in the first half and ultimately fell to the Rams 67-53. Knox falls to 0-6 in conference play after this loss.

Deryk Ruple led the Fire in scoring on the afternoon, netting 14 points while also recording three steals. DJ Lewis was shortly behind with 13 points and two steals. Blake Godbold also pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the team.

The Fire will take a few days off before taking on Beloit College at home on January 12.
