Morgan Potter, Knox College Women’s Basketball

JACKSONVILLE, Illinois- It took an extra period, but free basketball led to a victory for the Prairie Fire women’s basketball team. Knox put together a dominant first half, but struggled to find the bottom of the net in quarters three and four. A bucket by Jarrelyn McCall with 21 seconds left tied the game up and gave the Fire the momentum they needed to outscore IC 8-5 in overtime to bring home the victory.

McCall finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, as well as the clutch bucket to send the game to overtime. Morgan Potter followed closely behind with 12 points and six boards, but the leader in points on the night was Hailey Leinart who came off the bench and dropped 25 including 5-of-11 from three-point land. Kyra Huffman also chipped in nine points and a team high nine rebounds.

The Fire have now won four of their last five games and will take a week off before they take on rival Monmouth College at home on January 24.

Jonathan Damota, Knox College Men’s Basketball

JACKSONVILLE, Illinois- With the game tied 37-37 going into halftime, the Fire were looking to be in a position to make a run in the second half and come out of Illinois College with a victory. However, a 32-10 run in a nine minute span in the mid-second half left the game out of reach for the Fire as they fell 86-70 to the Blueboys. Knox (3-13) falls to 1-8 in the Midwest Conference.

The night did not go without another solid scoring effort by Deryk Ruple as he put up 18 points and dished out three assists to try to will his team to victory. Jonathan Damota also had yet another solid performance with 15 points and three assists; and both Blake Godbold and DJ Lewis added seven points. The Fire were evenly matched with IC for the majority of this game, however the Fire’s inability to get on the offensive glass as well as their counterpart is what ultimately left them on the losing end.

The Fire will come back home for their next two games. The first of which is on January 20 when they take on St. Norbert College in Memorial Gymnasium.
