Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 11th, 2018

Girls Basketball

Girls basketball teams from the Lincoln Trail Conference got one last game in before their conference tournament starts tonight at Mercer County High School and Intermediate School. The United Red Storm and Mercer County Golden Eagles went at it at the high school last night. The Golden Eagles held the Red Storm to two points in the opening quarter and jumped out to a 14-2 lead. United would outscore Mercer County in the second frame 6-4 but still trailed by ten points at the half. The Golden Eagles went on to win the contest 44-26. Jerzi Johnson led United with 10 points. She tied Mer Co’s Alyssa Hess for game-high honors.

Also in the LTC last night, the Annawan Bravettes got a scare from Wethersfield before pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 65-56 victory. With the win, Annawan extends their winning streak to 40 games, while moving to (19-0) on the season and (5-0) in the conference. The Bravettes were led by Arizona State recruit Jayde VanHyfte’s 37 points and 13 rebounds. She now has hauled in over 1,000 rebounds in her high school career. The Flying Geese were led in scoring by Brittany Litton’s 25 points. The Geese are (14-7) overall and drop to (3-2) in the LTC.

West Central gets a league win over Galva 39-38. The Heat are (2-3) in the Lincoln Trail and (4-13) overall. It was Ridgewood over ROWVA 61-52 and Princeville beat Stark County 61-35.

Pool play begins tonight in the LTC Girls basketball tournament, United plays 2nd-seeded Princeville in the Mercer County Intermediate gym in Aledo at 6:00, followed by Wethersfield and Ridgewood at 7:30. In the high school gym, top-seed Annawan plays ROWVA at 6:00, followed by Mercer County and West Central at 7:30. The tournament continues tomorrow and all next week, wrapping up on Saturday the 20th with championship cross-over play. Find the tourney schedule on our website, 1330wram.com.

Tournament play continued in the Camp Point Central/Southeastern Lady Panther Classic last night. The host Panthers beat Liberty 50-46, it was Quincy over South Fulton 35-27 and Brown County defeated West Hancock 46-43.

Boys Basketball

The Hancock County Tournament, hosted by Illini West High School had their 3rd day of pool play. West Hancock remained unbeaten in the tournament, and on the season, with a 62-25 blowout victory over Keokuk, Iowa. The Titans are (17-0) on the season. Illini West beat Mendon Unity 58-47 in the nightcap.

Junior High

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High basketball 7th and 8th graders swept Orion Wednesday night in Prairieland Conference play. The 7th grade Titans won 48-32 to improve to
12-4 (8-2) on the season. Leading scorers for Titans included Max Cole with 16 points and Silas Braun with 11. The 8th grade Titans won 48-18 to improve to 10-6 (6-4) on the season. Leading the Monmouth-Roseville 8th grade was Derek Chandler with 12 poinst. The Titans will start Prairieland Conference Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 13th.
