Girls Basketball

The Lincoln Trail Conference girls basketball tournament continued yesterday afternoon with six games being played between the Mercer County Intermediate and High School in Aledo. After dropping two games on Saturday, the United Red Storm played a single game yesterday. The Storm fall to Ridgewood 49-41. Carly Thompson and Jerzi Johnson were both in double figures for United with 13 and 10 points respectively. Lauren Curry led Ridgewood with 14 points. Ridgewood would drop their first game of the day, losing to Wethersfield 60-46. Curry and Carlie Barman each had 15 points apiece for Ridgewood. After winning their only game on Saturday, the West Central had two games on yesterday’s schedule. The Heat fall to Mercer County 50-21 in the first one and then lose to top-seed Annawan 69-25 in their final game of the day. Carley Lafary led the Heat in the loss to Mercer County with eight points. It was Jessica Smith leading West Central in scoring in the Annawan contest with nine. Annawan’s Jayde VanHyfte led all scorers with 27 points. The tournament gets a night off tonight before resuming tomorrow in Aledo. Looking at the pool standings, Annawan and Mercer County are (2-0) in Pool A and Princeville and Wethersfield are both (2-0) in Pool B.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls continued their MLK Tournament yesterday with a win over Bloomington 47-43. Andrea Sampson led the Streaks with 14 points and Yvonne Mixon added 13. That tournament concludes next Saturday at John Thiel Gym.

Boys Basketball

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys basketball team beat Peoria High 69-52 in the Galesburg Martin Luther King Tournament early in the day yesterday, leaving themselves with a shot at the tournament championship. The Streaks needed Minooka to beat Rockford East later in the day to play for the title in their final game of the day. Alas, Rockford East gets a 62-37 win to clinch the tourney title. Galesburg would beat Dunlap 68-51 in the last game of the tournament to finish at (4-1), the same record as Rockford East, but the Silver Streak lose the head-to-head tiebreaker, losing 82-58 to them back on January 4th. It was Jaylin McCants play off the bench being the hero in both ballgames for Galesburg. McCants scored a career-high 18 points and hauled in 10 rebounds in the first game and then bettered that in the second game with 20 points. He and Cornell Dotson were named to the all-tournament team.
