Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 17th, 2018

Wrestling

The Galesburg Silver Streak wrestling team hosted Limestone and Geneseo at John Thiel Gym for Red-Out Night. Red-Out Night was originated with the idea to help promote Heart Health Awareness and honor former coach John Chapman. The Streaks split the matches, beating Limestone 39-34 and losing to Geneseo 55-9. The Streaks are now (9-7) in dual matches this season.

 

Boys Basketball

The United Red Storm hosted ROWVA/Williamsfield in a Lincoln Trail Conference game at the Fieldhouse at United High School. The Cougars would pull away in the second half for a 58-42 win over the Red Storm. R/W was led by nine points from Isaac Cordle and Bret Woodside. United was led in scoring by Adam Johnson’s nine points. The Red Storm are now (0-3) in the LTC and (5-13) overall, while the Cougars improve to (1-2) in league play and (9-10) overall.

Elsewhere in the Lincoln Trail last night, it was Ridgewood over West Central in a shootout 77-61. Ridge Greenman scored 36 points for the winning Spartans to lead all scorers in the game. Ben Krieger led West Central, now (5-13) overall and (1-2) in the LTC, with 18 points. Ridgewood is (9-6) overall and (1-2) in the conference.

The Mercer County Golden Eagles defeated Galva 80-61, it was Annawan over Stark County in blowout 48-20 and Wethersfield beating Princeville 48-35.

In the Prairieland Conference, the A-Town Tornadoes beat Knoxville 50-42 in a game between local rivals. Calen Mahr led A-Town with 14 points and Cade Shonkwiler led Knoxville in scoring with 15. The Tornadoes are (11-4) on the season and evens their Prairieland record to (2-2). Knoxville drops to (4-16) and (2-5) in the conference.

Also in the Prairieland, it was Farmington over Peoria Heights 57-35 and Havana over Lewistown on the road 66-63 in overtime.

Girls Basketball

The A-Town Tornadoes lost to Brimfield 58-28 in a makeup game from Jan. 4th. In another makeup contest, United Township beat Alleman 46-30 in girls basketball as well.

Swimming and Diving

The Galesburg Silver Streak swimmers and divers were beaten by Dunlap 115-71 at Dunlap High School. Drew Giles was first in the 100 yard backstroke, while Austin White earned a first place in the 1-meter diving competition.

Junior High

Monmouth-Roseville’s 7th grade and 8th grade boys basketball teams qualified themselves for the Prairieland Conference tournament championships tonight with wins in the semi-finals last night. The Titan 7th grade beat Rockridge 40-28 behind 16 points from Max Cole and 11 from Silas Braun. The Titan 8th grade defeated Mercer County 29-19. Ben Anderson led Monmouth-Roseville with 12 points. In the championship games at Monmouth-Roseville Junior High in Roseville tonight, it’s Monmouth-Roseville vs. top-seed Mercer County at 6:00 in the 7th grade title game and Monmouth-Roseville vs. top-seed Rockridge immediately following at 7:15.

The Monmouth-Roseville junior high volleyball teams dropped a pair of matches at Mercer County last night. Lexi Finnicum led the Titans in the 7th grade match with nine service points. The 8th grade Titans were led by Macy Norris and Kendall Ferry with eight service points apiece.
