Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 19th, 2018

Girls Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titan girls basketball teams hosted the Camp Point Central/Southeastern Lady Panthers last night at the Shoebox at Monmouth-Roseville High School. The Panthers are coming off back-to-back IHSA Class 2A state tournament appearances but the Titans won the first meeting between the teams back in December. This time around, the Panthers get the victory, 63-41. Carly Gillen led Mon-Rose with 17 points. With the loss, the Titans are now (15-7) overall and (2-2) in the West Central Conference’s North Division. The Panthers improve to (14-8) and (3-4). Monmouth-Roseville’s JV team won the first game of the night 58-34. Lily Cundiff led all scorers with 14 points, including four 3-pointers.

Pool play concluded last night in the Lincoln Trail Conference’s Girls Basketball Tournament in Aledo. The United Red Storm fell to Galva 39-28. Carly Thompson led United with nine points. Galva’s Darrah Schilling led all scorers in the game with 16 points. The West Central Heat also dropped their final pool play game to Stark County 54-32. Carly Lafary led the Heat offense with 10 points. Tomorrow night’s tournament championship game is set. The Annawan Bravettes defeated Mercer County last night 65-29 for their 44th straight win and 23rd win of this season. The Bravettes go (4-0) this week and will play the Wethersfield Flying Geese tomorrow night at 7:00 at Mercer County High School. The Flying Geese also finished (4-0) in their pool, getting a last-second 58-57 win over higher seed Princeville last night. Taylor Lay’s rebound put-back at the horn wins this one for the Geese. Princeville will play Mercer County at 5:30 tomorrow night for 3rd place. The United Red Storm will take on ROWVA at 1:00 tomorrow afternoon for 9th and the West Central Heat play Galva for 7th at 2:30. Ridgewood battles Stark County for 5th at 4:00. Again, all games will be played at Mercer County High School in Aledo.

In Prairieland Conference action, it was Knoxville over Havana 55-48. Lauren Kavanaugh scored 18 points to lead Knoxville. Also, it was BPC over A-Town 48-38.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls varsity basketball team fell to United Township 38-24 last night in Western Big Six Conference play in East Moline. Riley Jenkins led Galesburg with seven points. The Streaks fall below .500 on the season to (11-12) and drop to (2-4) in the Big Six standings. The Panthers are now (11-10) and (4-3) in the league. The Silver Streak sophomores got a win over the Panthers in the first game of the night. Galesburg wins 53-38. Tiara Pendleton led all scorers with 19 points. The Streak sophomores are (10-5) overall on the season and (3-3) in the Big Six. The Galesburg freshman girls basketball team was at home last night, hosting Pekin. The Streaks lose a close one, falling 45-44. Lauren Livingston led Galesburg with 17 points.

Rock Island took some of their frustrations of a stretch of losses out on Moline last night as they beat the Maroons 95-64. Rock Island’s Brea Beal and Chrislynn Carr combined for 69 points in the game, with Beal having 35 of those. The Rocks made 20, 3-pointers in the game with the Beal-Carr duo combining for 14 of those. Also, it was Quincy over Alleman 41-38 in overtime.

Bowling

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls bowling team lost to United Township 2787-2656 in East Moline. Alyssa Theobald led the Streaks with a 3-game series of 6114. Mackenzie Bowton rolled a 609 series as well for Galesburg.

Junior High

Fresh off a pair of Prairieland Conference Tournament championships, the Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High 7th and 8th grade Titan boys basketball teams wrapped up their regular season with games at Brimfield Thursday night. The 7th grade Titans won 26-19 to improve to 16-4 on the season. Jerome Jackson led Monmouth-Roseville in scoring with 11 points and Max Cole was also in double figures with 10. The 7th grade Titans will start 3A IESA Regional play tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 vs. Sherrard at Mercer County Jr. High in Aledo. The 8th grade Titans fell 47-20 to the Indians to finish the regular season at 13-7. Charlie Fletcher led Monmouth-Roseville with five points. The 8th grade Titans will start their 3A IESA Regional on Saturday, Jan. 27 at United.

This past Saturday, the Monmouth-Roseville 6th grade girls basketball Shooting Stars swept a pair of games from ATown and West Central. In the first game of the day vs. ATown, 9 of 11 Stars scored in a 32-8 victory. Meyah Hunter led the way with 8 points and Elise Blaesing followed with 6. In the 2nd game, the Stars won a hard fought game 25-18. Natalie Boyd paced the Stars with 8 points. The Shooting Stars return to action tomorrow against Farmington and Princeville.
