Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 22nd, 2018

Boys Basketball

It was another full day of high school basketball at the 19th annual Great Western Shootout in Abingdon on Saturday. We had three of those games on the PRSN, starting with the United/Ridgewood contest in the first game of event. The Red Storm fell behind 16-4 after the first quarter to the Spartans and could not recover, eventually losing by 25 points, 67-42. DJ Dutton led the Storm with nine points. The Shootout committee names an MVP after each of the seven games played throughout the day. Briar Greenman was named MVP of game one with 20 points for Ridgewood.

The A-Town Tornado boys basketball team took on Orion. In a close game throughout, the Chargers defeat the Tornadoes 44-39. A-Town had two players in double figures with Calen Mahr scoring 13 points and Ryan Adolphson scoring 11. Seth West from Orion was named MVP.

Other winners from Abingdon on Saturday included Galva over Havana 72-42. Galva’s Mason Kaiser was chosen as the MVP with 16 points. Also, it was Delavan over Knoxville 47-36……Rockridge defeated the Ridgewood Spartans 71-31 in the Spartan’s second game of the day and finally in the marquee matchup of the day, it was Farmington coming back in the second half of the final game of the day to defeat Wethersfield 62-48. Farmington trailed at the half by 10 points before outscoring the Flying Geese 41-17 in the final 16 minutes. The Farmers improved to (17-2) on the season, while the Flying Geese had their 11 game winning streak broken and fall to (12-6).

Girls Basketball

The Monmouth-Roseville Titans hosted the Macomb Bombers in Monmouth on Saturday for a West Central Conference showdown. Macomb, who employs the high-octane Grinnell system of basketball, gets a wild 100-89 win over the Titans in overtime. Monmouth-Roseville’s Carly Gillen led her team in scoring with 33 points and also hauled in 17 rebounds. Cora Neal added 14 points for the Titans as well. The 189 combined total points was the 7th highest total score in IHSA girls basketball history. The Titans fall to (15-8) overall and (2-3) in the WCC North. The Bombers are now (11-10) and also (2-3) in the conference.

The A-Town Tornado girls lost to Midwest Central 70-32 in the Great Western Shootout in Abingdon. A-Town was led by 12 points and 11 rebounds from freshman Emily Wilson.

The Galesburg Silver Streak girls basketball team finished up their Martin Luther King Tournament on Saturday by splitting a pair of games against LaSalle-Peru and state-ranked Morton. The Streaks started the day by beating L/P 53-18 behind 13 points from Rylee Chockley off the bench and 11 points from Emily Meinert. Galesburg dropped the final game of the tournament to Morton 65-46. Meinert led the Streaks in scoring in that one with 10 points. The Silver Streaks finish the tournament with a record of (3-2) and are now (12-13) overall on the season. Morton is your MLK Tournament champs with a perfect (5-0) record.

Wrestling

The Galesburg Silver Streak and Knoxville Blue Bullet wrestling teams participated in the Orion High School Bob Mitton tournament over the weekend. The Blue Bullets placed 11th as a team while the Streaks placed 14th. Some nice individual performances included Galesburg’s Nick Perry and Cody Thomas with second place finishes. Knoxville had four wrestlers finish in 4th place in their respective weight classes. Orion was the team champ.

Bowling

The A-Town Tornado boys bowlers were in Mt. Vernon, Illinois for their sectional tournament. The Tornadoes placed 11th of 12 participating schools. Dalton Gabbert led A-Town with a 6-game series of 1258. That was just 49 pins from advancing as an individual.

Junior High

The Monmouth Roseville and United 7th grade basketball teams won their first round IESA Regional games in Aledo. Monmouth-Roseville defeated Sherrard 38-9. Max Cole had 14
points for the winning Titans. United beat Knoxville 40-35. The Titans will play Rockridge on Monday at 7:15 at Mercer County Junior High in Joy. The Titans record is 17-4. United will take on Mercer County in the first sem-final game of the night on Monday at 5:30.

The Monmouth-Roseville Jr. High wrestling team traveled to the Rockridge Tournament on Saturday. Individual results included Mourtala Thiobou got a pin at 100 pounds and a 5th place medal. Alfredo Garcia won two matches by pin at 155 pounds. LaRue Nichols got a pin at 185 and Christian Tepexcuapa won by a pin in the heavyweight division.
