Local High School and Junior High Sports Update for Jan. 2nd, 2017

Boys Basketball

The A-Town Tornado boys went (3-1) last week, culminating in a 45-33 loss to West Hancock late Saturday night in the Macomb-Western Holiday Tournament at Western Illinois University’s Western Hall. A-Town sophomore Ryan Adolphson was named to the All-Tournament team and West Hancock’s Logan Dorethy was named MVP of the tourney. The Monmouth-Roseville boys lost to Farmington 59-54 on Saturday morning to end their week at (1-2) in the tournament.

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys stumbled in the semi-finals of the Taylorville Holiday Tournament but bounced back to get a 3rd place finish later in the evening on Friday. The Silver Streaks defeated Dunlap 49-43 to bring home a trophy. Khalil Hodge and Cornell Dotson were both awarded All-tournament status.

The BPC Spartan boys were runnersup in the Mississippi Valley Invitational Tournament. The Spartans lost to Payson-Seymour 64-45 on Friday night.

DePue beat Galva 37-32 for the 90th Annual Princeville Boys Basketball tournament championship.

Girls Basketball

The Blue Bullets were (4-0) heading into Saturday’s title tilt against also (4-0) Stockton. Stockton would go on to beat the Bullets 56-45 for the championship. Earlier in the day, Knoxville took on the Monmouth-Roseville Titans in a makeup game from Friday. The Titans fell 46-45 on a free throw with 3 seconds left in the game. The Titans would go on to beat Erie 36-35 in the 3rd place game on Saturday night. A layup by sophomore Kelci Shelton at the buzzer put a wrap on that one. Knoxville’s Breena Shreeves and Monmouth-Roseville’s Carly Gillen both made the all-tournament team. Wethersfield’s Brittney Litton was named the tournament’s MVP for the second straight game.

After going (1-2) in the pool play portion of Mattoon Holiday Tournament, the Galesburg Silver Streak girls basketball team went (2-0) in the bracket portion, claiming the title with a 42-29 win over Mattoon in the finale on Friday night. Andrea Sampson and Yvonne Mixon were named to the all-tourney team.

Other tournament winner’s last week included Illini West winning the 36th annual Beardstown Lady Tiger Classic. The Chargers defeated Pleasant Plains 34-28. The A-Town Tornadoes were (2-2) for the week, beating Athens 38-33 on the final day. The Macomb Bombers were (3-1) for the tourney, beating Brown County 80-74 on Friday.

The host Lady Princes went (5-0) to win the 7th Annual Princeville Girls Tournament title. The BPC Spartan girls went (3-2) to get a 3rd place plaque.

Wrestling

The Galesburg Silver Streak wrestling team placed 17th out of 25 teams participating in the Lincoln Tournament last week. Impressive individual finishes for Galesburg included Robert Castellano and Cody Thomas’ 2nd place finishes. Galesburg gets right back on the mat tonight as they head to Metamora for a triple-dual meet with Metamora and Midwest Central.
