MC Preparing for Spring Semester '18

Share

Spring semester 2018 will begin at Monmouth College on Monday, Jan. 15. The introduction of the new semester coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Aside from giving students the day off, the College will be hosting a special Convocation to celebrate MLK Day in Dahl Chapel starting at noon. Monmouth College’s Vice President of Communications Duane Bonifer shared his thoughts on the importance of MLK Day:

“It will be 50 years this April where Dr. King was assassinated down in Memphis … To me, these are the days you should have to celebrate him and his words and his ideas. It’s great that you get to sleep in, but I think it’s also great that you can get together and talk about the ideas of social justice and protection for all people. I think that’s what we’ll have Monday at Monmouth,” Bonifer stated.

The event’s keynote speaker will be Lecia Brooks, Outreach Director at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. The Convocation is free and open to the public.

Bonifer also previewed the keynote speaker for Monmouth College’s 161st Commencement Ceremony on May 13.

“We’re going to have a great speaker this year for Commencement. Min Jin Lee, who’s second novel came out last year, it’s called Pachinko, was named one of the top 10 books of 2017. Not just one of the top 10 novels; one of the top 10 books of 2017,” he said.
