Monmouth led by dozen in the first half, but had to go overtime to knock off Midwest Conference-leading St. Norbert 70-67 Saturday afternoon at Glennie Gym.

Tied at 66-66 with just over a minute left in OT, Lamar Watson canned two free throws as part of his career-high 11 points to give the Scots just enough margin to hang on for the win. The Green Knights got one point back when Mitchell Reinthaler missed the first, but sank the second free throw on St. Norbert’s possession. After the Knights rebounded a Monmouth miss with 30 seconds left, Paul Engo III made a crucial steal and was fouled, setting up the clinching free throws. Engo drained both with 11 seconds to go as the Knights’ tying 3-pointer with two seconds left in OT missed its mark.

The Knights trailed 33-23 at the half, but roared back in the second 20 minutes to force overtime. Tied at 58-all, Monmouth had a chance to end it in regulation, but could not connect on a last-second shot.

A night after becoming the fifth-leading scorer in Monmouth history, Will Jones led the Scots with 14 points to join Watson – who went 3-for-6 from 3-point range – in double figures. Freshman Stephon Bobbitt came off the bench to post 10 points, sinking all four of his shots. Defense ruled in the game as Justin Aluya recorded six of the Scots’ seven blocks.

The win keeps Monmouth in second place in the MWC, a game behind St. Norbert. Monmouth travels to Grinnell Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup. The Pioneers are a game back of the Scots on the loss side.
