GALESBURG — A pair of third-quarter runs helped the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team stay hot with a 77-72 victory over Loras JV on Saturday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (6-8) erased a 40-36 halftime deficit with a 13-0 run to take the lead for good in the third and, after the Duhawks closed within a point, added a 9-0 blitz later in the period to lift them to their fifth win in six games.

Four Sandburg starters scored in double figures, led by sophomore Madison Lowe (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap), who scored 17 and drained five of the Chargers’ six 3-pointers on the day. Freshman Jordan Price (Fulton, Ill./Fulton), newly inserted into the starting lineup, scored 14 points, pulled in a game-best nine rebounds and handed out four assists.

Sophomore guard Alivia Cummings (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) had 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and eight rebounds, and sophomore forward Willow Porter (Wyoming, Ill./Stark County) had 13 points and seven boards.

Down 43-38 early in the third, Cummings opened the go-ahead run with driving layup. Lowe’s trey off a feed from Morgan Kirby (Fairmount, Ill./Salt Fork) gave Sandburg a lasting lead at 46-43, and Cummings closed the run with a layup for a 51-43 advantage midway through the third.

The Duhawks scored the next seven to get within 51-50, but the Chargers responded with nine points in a span of just 42 seconds. Cummings capped it with a three-point play for a 60-50 advantage with 1:18 left in the third. Loras got with six in the latter stages of the fourth, but Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) found Sam Mayberry (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) for consecutive layups to help Sandburg close out the victory.

“We didn’t play our best game, but we came through in big moments when we needed to get stops and scores,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “During our two runs in the second half, we were able to create turnovers on defense and turn that into easy baskets for us.”

Sandburg will play at Augustana JV at 6 p.m. Monday in its final tune-up before the conference season. The Chargers open their Arrowhead Conference schedule at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Sauk Valley.
