Both of those players led United to a 54-47 win over the Rebels in a Lincoln Trail Conference victory. The Storm, who trailed 14-13 after the first quarter, led by 15 points heading to the fourth quarter but a late rally by Stark County cut the deficit to three points with a few minutes remaining but United would hold for their 8th win of the season and 2nd win of the LTC schedule. Stark County was led by Payton Browning’s 13 points. The United JV won the first game of the day 77-45.

In another LTC makeup game, the West Central fell to state-ranked Annawan 73-26. Annawan is now (23-3) overall and (6-1) in the Lincoln Trail. West is (6-20).

Wrestling

The Class 1A Stanford Olympia wrestling sectional tournament took place on Friday and Saturday. Four Monmouth-Roseville Titan grapplers took part, with none moving on to the state finals this weekend. All four got victories in the first round but could not earn a spot in the finals. The Knoxville Blue Bullets had five wrestlers participating in Olympia and had two make it out to the state finals in Champaign starting on Thursday. Reuben Cantu won his 138 weight class to improve his overall season record to (31-3). Kage Leab will also head to Champaign as he placed 3rd at 152. Galesburg’s Robert Castellano finished 2nd in the 195 pound weight class in the Class 2A Sycamore Sectionals. Castellano will wrestle in Champaign this weekend. Cody Thomas went (2-2) in the 285 pound class this past weekend in Sycamore but will just miss out on moving on.

Bowling

The A-Town Lady Tornado bowlers rolled their way to the LaSalle-Peru Sectionals on Saturday but that’s where their season will end as the Tornadoes placed 11th out of 12 teams taking part. Amber Stevenson led A-Town with a 6-game series of 1149 with a single-game high of 237. Alexis Wilson scored a 1099 and Vanessa Turner posted a score of 1044. Galesburg had three bowlers in Peru on Saturday and none of those ladies advanced to the state finals in Rockford on Saturday either. Alyssa Theobold rolled a very respecatable 1199. Hannah Leon had a 1058 as well for Galesburg. Yorkville’s Katie Orisek was the individual champion with an amazing 6-game series of 1415 for a 236 average. That score included a perfect game of 300 in her 6th game.

Swimming and Diving

The Galesburg Silver Streak boys swimmers and divers took part in the Western Big Six Conference championship meet on Saturday in East Moline at United Township High School. The Streaks took 2nd as a team, well behind conference champ Moline, who won all but two events on the day. Galesburg’s Drew Giles continued his great season with a new Western Big Six Conference record-setting performance in the 100 yard breaststroke. Giles’ time of 1:00.81 was better than the record set back in 1990 by United Township’s Keith Gunderson. Giles also placed 2nd in the 200 IM. The Streak’s Austyn White is the conference champ in the 1 meter diving competition. His score of 347.25 was better than anyone else’s. Those finishes put both he and Giles on the Western Big Six’s All-Conference Team. The Galesburg 400 yard freestyle relay team of Giles, Jared Shipp, Lorenzo Moreno and Zach Cantwell placed 2nd to end a great day in the pool for the Silver Streaks.
