Girls Basketball

IHSA Class 1A and 2A girls basketball sectional championship games were held around the state of Illinois last night. Close to home, it was a battle of Lincoln Trail vs. Prairieland Conference regular season runnerups in the 1A Bushnell-Prairie City final in Bushnell. The Lewistown Indians, who finished tied with Farmington for the Prairieland Conference but lost the head-to-head tiebreaker, met the LTC runnerup Princeville Lady Princes. This was a rematch of a sectional matchup from last year. It was the Princeville Lady Princes who won the ballgame a year ago but Lewistown would get revenge in this year’s contest. The Indians led by two points at the half…but would fall behind by as many as six points in the 3rd quarter before hitting some big free throws down the stretch to get a 45-42 win, their 30th of the season against just four losses. Princeville bows out at (30-5) for the year. Anna Heffren led Lewistown with 15 points. Princeville’s Lucy Waid led all scorers in the game with 16. The Indians move on to the Brown County High School Super Sectional on Monday night and will take on Lebanon, who defeated Okawville 50-46 last night at the North Greene Sectional.

Also in Class 1A, the Annawan Bravettes carried a 54 game winning streak into last night’s Hinckley-Big Rock sectional championship game in Hinckley. That streak was tested by the Newark Lady Norse, a team that Annawan had beaten by 33 points back on December 9th at home. Newark jumped all over the Bravettes in the first quarter, leading 17-8 at the end of the first eight minutes of play. But the defending state champions would find a way to get it done, despite having their all-time leading scorer Jayde VanHyfte get into second half trouble. Despite sitting out a good portion of the 3rd quarter, VanHyfte totaled 31 points and 12 rebounds as the Annawan Bravettes do just enough to get a 52-45 win and advance on to Monday’s Pontiac Super-Sectional against Danville Schlarman, another team Annawan has already faced this season. The Hilltoppers topped Lexington 60-29 in Colfax last night. Annawan beat Schlarman for the State Farm Holiday Classic championship 56-46 in late December. Annawan’s 55 game winning streak is the IHSA’s 5th longest girls streak of all-time, breaking a tie with Chicago Marshall. Should Lewistown and Annawan both win on Monday night, they’ll meet in the 1A State semi-finals on Friday afternoon at 1:00 in Redbird Arena in Normal.

The Moline Maroons lost their Class 4A regional championship game 67-52 to Bradley-Bourbanais last night. Moline standout Alannah Crompton led the way for the Maroons with another double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Moline ends their season with a record of (19-12). Rocky plays Normal West tonight for the Pekin regional championship.

Galesburg’s Robert Castellano won his opening round Class 2A match at 195 pounds and Knoxville’s Reuben Cantu and Kage Leab both were victorious in the 138 and 152 pound Class 1A weight classes respectively.
